When Autocross Goes Bad

gt3-before.jpg

Anyone who’s been involved in any sort of motorsport knows that your bright sunny afternoon can go completely upside down in the blink of an eye. VW Vortex member Bandit27 took part in his first ever SCCA autocross over the weekend. He got to see what can happen first hand.

No, the pristine GT3 above isn’t Bandit27’s, but the picture is. The beast isn’t so pristine anymore.

From Bandit27: So the guy went through the cones and hit the Celica spinning it around. The GT3 then bounced of the Cel and into the Subbie and spun back around to where you see it sitting. The Subbie was knocked into the poor A3.

Autocross is still the safest version of motorsport, but like it says on the waiver: Motor racing is a dangerous sport!

Be sure to visit VW Vortex to see the full extent of the carnage.

Not only it is a dangerous sport, it can also turn your car into a complete mess in just a blink of an eye. I wonder how racers put up with this. They will certainly lose from accidents which looks pretty often

Just to clarify Karen. I think this is the first time something so major has ever happened at an autocross. It really is the safest kind of motorsports. It just shows what is possible though.

Yeah I’ve watched them pretty regularly as a spectator for 15 years and I’ve never even seen a minor fender bender.

Autocrossing just isn’t what it used to be. What were these cars doing so close to each other on the track? In my day, two cars max were on the track at any given time. Maybe three if the course was long enough. This wouldn’t have happened it they were started further apart or the course workers red flagged the car that was catching up to quickly to the car ahead of it.

The last time I autocrossed was in about 93. Back then, all the courses were one car at a time. At least up here in ontario. I think I only ever ran one mirror course. I don’t know what format they use these days here.
