Video: Autolite talks about spark plugs and fuel economy

Having noticed our post on fuel economy recently, the folks at Autolite directed us towards their new YouTube channel where they are spreading the gospel of the clean spark. Ok, so they design and sell spark plugs for a living, of course they want us to look at their ads videos. Really though, they’ve put together some pretty cool vids including ones with drag racers Cory McClenathan and Cruz Pedregon.

In this video, Autolite’s tech trainer talks about how the condition of your spark plugs affects fuel economy.

Having been involved in the auto service/repair industry over 40 years a lot has changed. One thing that used to be available to mechanics was major spark club manufactures used to invite mechanics to their one day class room schools free of charge not only to promote their brand but to teach mechanics all they needed to know about them.

Champion Spark Plug Corporation used to keep their corporate plane in San Jose, California and they had promotions all the time. Lucky mechanics were picked and flown to Los Angeles to their class room for the day including lunch. To this day I remember the dyno that sat right in the classroom and how the instructor would show us the drastic difference made by simply changing a single spark plug but even more interesting where things that many mechanics don’t even think about… When the instructor put on one bad spark plug wire you could not believe how much warmer the engine ran. By the end of the day all of us knew so much more about spark plugs than just how they make your engine tune up better.

Through modern technology, manufacturers don’t need to fly people across country to do this stuff any more!

That said, trips like that were/are a great perk for top performers and making someone feel great goes a long way!
