/DRIVE reveals new business strategy, pledges to continue creating great content

Here in The Garage, we’ve been big supporters of the gang behind the stellar YouTube channel /DRIVE since I met up with a bunch of the guys at IMPA Test Days way back in 2007. Back then, we were all considered the new kids of automotive media and were the first batch of webbies to be accepted as members. Since then, we’ve all had life changes, but have continued working in automotive media to fulfill our passion for automobiles, with varying levels of success.

J.F. Musial, Mike Spinelli and their crew have gone on to create some of the best automotive video content the world has ever seen, across a variety of outlets, from YouTube up front, to behind the scenes for a few auto manufacturers. The team’s latest project, /DRIVE not only provides stunning visuals and commentary, but has generated some staggering statistics. In just two years, /DRIVE has amassed a staggering 1,146,724 subscribers and their videos have been viewed 193,522,560 times.

While sifting through some La Carrera videos last night, I came across this video from last Fall of Markus Winkelhock rolling a MINI at the Nordschleife track. This must have been one hell of a ride!

Over at the Jalopy Journal last weekend, they hosted the H.A.M.B. drags and Brian Fox brought out the Zorba’s Ghost dragster. After rectifying a throttle problem (or so they thought) Brian set out to show the crowds what the rail could do. He must have been taking lessons from those NASCAR winners!

While taking photos of Marcus Glarner’s BMW M1 twins, I decided to take a quick video to see what the new camera is capable of. This is my first attempt at making a video with the new camera. I was very happy with the result, the sound is killer and the picture is crystal clear. Until that it it is uploaded to youtube and the compression messed up the images a bit. Apparently I have some learning to do! Maybe we’ll ship this off to Editblog for some fixing.

While looking for Transsyberia Rally content, I just came across this unbelievable footage of a Defender 90 making it’s way through some super deep water. Absolutely insane!

Following a ten hour wait at the Russian border on Friday, teams finally made their way in to Mongolia. During the 43.5 mile transit section to the camp at Oelgy, several teams had to stop to change tires. Even though it was a transit, the road was so rocky that tire punctures were commonplace. Yesterday was a well needed day of rest and the competitive stages continue today.

World of Outlaws visit Oshweken Speedway

August 8, 2007 by Jeff Daley 2 Comments

At long last, I am back to report on my visit to the World of Outlaws race at Oshweken Speedway.

When I first arrived at the track, the first thing that ran through my mind was ‘Why are the spectators all wearing safety glasses?’ As soon as the cars took to the track, I answered my own question. 700hp sprint cars racing on dirt with enormous wings kicks up one heck of a dust storm. Thankfully for the spectators, there were several caution periods during the 30 lap feature race, since after about 5 green flag laps, it was all but impossible to see the track from the stands!

I must say, it was quite the amazing show, although I am still finding dirt in my shoes, two weeks later.

Video: Dario Franchitti’s wild ride

August 6, 2007 by Gary Grant 4 Comments

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 215 mph, Dario Franchitti got a bit of a nudge from Dan Wheldon during the Firestone Indy 400 at Michigan International Speedway. What followed was one of the wildest rides IRL has seen for some time. Perhaps the wildest part is that there were no injuries. While the design strength of the cars kept everyone safe, Lady Luck player her part as well, given that Dario’s car hit AJ Foyt IV in the head.

So now we’ve seen Aaron’s coupe in stills and even with a starlet, but how about seeing the beast in action. It seems the young man has been holding out on us, as he’s had this video hiding in the gootoobz.

Oh how things have changed. No more Pacers, no more Gremlins. No more racially motivated commentary in advertising! Here from youtube user WookieCookie is a 1974 AMC Gremlin ad. Actually it sounds more like an ad for extended warranties, but I was mesmerized by that fro.
