Look out NASCAR, your world is about to go upside down!

November 11, 2010 by Gary Grant 2 Comments

Over the years I haven’t commented on anything NASCAR too much as it hasn’t really been on my radar. Now that I spend so much time chasing the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series teams with a camera, I have more of a feel for the roundy round scene. Today’s news in the world of NASCAR is rather large, so I’m going to have a go at some commentary.

Rally fans found out yesterday that Travis Pastrana had cut his ties with Subaru. For you good old boys who don’t follow anything outside of the circle, Pastrana is a top competitor in motocross, freestyle riding and rallying. He has won multiple championships in all of them and for the past 5 years has been competing in the Rally America championship at the wheel of a Subaru.

Be socially active: sign petition to get $500 rally car in to the X games!

A while back, unemployed gearhead Bill Caswell became a household name thanks to taking 3rd place in class in the Mexico round of the WRC. Ok, so maybe not a household name, but a lot of gearheads knew about the dude in the $500 BMW beater.

That’s right, Caswell and co-driver Ben Slocum patched together a $500 beater and went to Rally Mexico. Not only did they finish, but they beat a ton of very expensive racing equipment, finished 3rd in class and would have been counted as 23rd had they been entered in the WRC portion of the event. For those of you who don’t understand international rally, that is the equivalent of showing at Daytona in a 4 cylinder mini stock from the local 1/8 mile oval and beating half the NASCAR field!

Tanner Faust does a little Gymkhana of his own in X Games Fiesta

July 29, 2009 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

Unfortunately we didn’t get around to covering Pikes Peak this year, but we’re going to try to stay on top of the X Games.

While Ken Block has wowed the world with his wicked Subie slides lately, he’s not the only one who can wheel a rally car! Leading up to the X Games, Tanner Faust, Ford and Streetfire are workin’ hard to spread the smokey goodness that is the Ford Fiesta. Here’s to hoping that this short flick is just a teaser of what’s to come!

2009 Olsbergs MSE Ford Fiesta

Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday is an old cliche from the golden years of motor racing and car sales. Some folks just can’t see that in today’s politically correct, recessionary world. Fortunately, the folks at Ford have a deep history of sales resulting from wins so today’s news should not come as a surprise.

As part of their Fiesta Movement to build hype for the upcoming Ford Fiesta, Ford is entering 3 rally prepped Fiesta’s in the 15th edition of X-Games at the end of this month in Los Angeles. Prepared by Olsbergs Motor Sport Evolution race team, these 3 cars will be piloted by a trio of superstar drivers. The Olsbergs MSE branded car will be driven by Swedish IndyCar driver Kenny Brack while a pair of ROCKSTAR Energy Drink cars will be entered for drift star Tanner Faust and 10 time X-Games Moto X medal winner Brian Deegan.

Unlike traditional motorsports, X-Games is wildly popular with the video game generations, who are drawn by the extreme action of bikes, boards and rally cars. A win at X-Games pretty much guarantees interest from a whole new crowd of car buyers, a demographic which Ford desperately needs in the showrooms.

This post is our first for a contest Ford is hosting to invite non traditional media to a product launch later this month.

I don’t have any background story yet, but this video of Andrew Comrie Picard and the Evo at the 2008 X-Games doesn’t really need any description.

When it comes to extreme motorsports here in North America, our choices are pretty limited. We have the X-Games, where closed course rally and motor cross have been added, but that’s about it. Over in Europe, they have the real deal. Teams of drivers race against each other in identically prepared machines, and oh what machines they are. A different car for each round. A buggy, an Aston Martin, a Ford Focus WRC, a Fiat Punto and a spec F touring car.

Flat Over Crest launches video #2

August 14, 2007 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

The Flat Over Crest team has killed it yet again with the launch of video magazine #2, where Warwick Patterson follows Ken Block (above at the X Games) to New Zealand for the Rally of Whangarei. Block details the recce process and how it can make or break a driver’s rally. The film quality and soundtrack are stunning.

Warwick Patterson is definitely the Warren Miller of Rallysport!

Once you’ve watched the video, be sure to stop by the new FOC message board and say hi.

Somehow I missed the fact that X Games 13 was happening last week, but Andrew Harvey and crew got to LA and as always have captured some incredible moments. You can read about the whole adventure and see tons of great images at Flat Over Crest.
