Another Mosport based challenger to join 2011 Trans Am series

March 30, 2011 by Gary Grant 3 Comments

We’ve been lucky to share a bit of the Trans Am series with our readers here in The Garage through our long time friend Blaise Csida, who runs Gateway Racing at Mosport when he’s not racing in the series. I received a note earlier this week from Jon Brett of Time Warp Racing, telling me that he would be entering the Mosport round of the 2011 Trans Am series.

TWR press release

Plans are being made by Time Warp Racing to field a Derhaag bodied C5 Corvette in the upcoming Mosport Trans-Am event on the May long weekend.

The car is currently at Gateway Racing where it is being prepared by Trans-Am competitor Blaise Csida and staff.

Jonathan Brett who owns and drives the car does not expect to be competitive, but says “yeah we are probably a field filler but we are dipping a toe into the water, and who knows where it could go from there” he said.

The original chassis was created in 1977, by Mo Carter and ran succesfully as an IMSA GTX car. It also saw action in Trans-Am in the hands of Jerry Simmons during the 80’s and 90’s. It has held short track records at the Glen and won the South Atlantic Road Racing Championship. Over the years many upgrades have been done, but it is still old school compared to the modern designs.

Jonathan has raced with VARAC, CASC and SVRA for a decade and is ready to try something new and hopes to support the growth in Trans-Am.

I’ve seen the car and was a little bit surprised to hear that the chassis is as old as it is, so I decided to do a bit of digging. This car has some serious Canadian racing history!

Robert Barg, another Canadian who raced T/A back in the glory days says:
According to IMSA info on the net this was actually an early De Kon Monza (Horst Kwech & Lee Dykstra) that was crashed and sold to Mo Carter.

I had always assumed that Brad Francis built this car for Mo, but maybe it was just restored by Brad and that wild camaro bodywork was put on the car? As I remember the engine that was used and raced by Mo was a big block Chev with 2 inline 4 bl. carbs. Roy Bean, who helped look after the ex Mo Carter 67 camaro that I raced for Al Richards, also ended up working with Brad on that Carter car. Last time I saw it racing was at the 1980 Sebring 12 hr – co-driver with Mo was Craig Carter (no relation). It was later sold and raced in the T/A series with different Corvette bodywork I understand and has found it’s way to the Toronto area some time ago. I understand Roy has been working for Leo Romano and built a truck racer for him that runs at Mosport. It would be nice to see it back on the track as raced by Mo, but you can update a chassis from those years and they are still fast. The current closed wheel track record holder at Mission is a late seventies era T/A Corvette that has been updated and driven by Dave Kunicki.

It is going to be very cool to see local car, with 3 decades worth of racing history under a modern skin, in action with the big boys in a couple of months. We’ll keep our readers up to date with news and images as the race weekend comes closer!

The Lightweight on the podium again at Canadian International Auto Show

March 1, 2011 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

It is known as The Lightweight. The reality is that this blue and yellow bomb is a heavyweight in the history of North American road racing. I’m sure many visitors to the show just saw a cool old racecar. I saw the Belle of the ball!

This 1967 Chevrolet Camaro is the 14th Z28 ever built and was originally transformed into a race car in the service department of Gorries Chev in the east end of Toronto for team owner Terry Godsall. One of Canada’s top drivers of the day, Craig Fisher, campaigned the car in the Trans Am portion of the ’67 Daytona 24 hour endurance race. Fisher finished 2nd in the Trans Am race, scoring the first series points for the Camaro. The 13th production unit was being raced by the Roger Penske and Mark Donohue duo.

After the destruction of the 13 car, Fisher joined Penske and he and Donohue co-drive the 14, but not before Penske & Donohue worked their magic on it. The car was acid dipped and received a Traco V-8 and was painted in the blue & yellow Penske Sunoco colors. Between Fisher and Donohue, the car won 2 of the final four races. In the final race, the car lapped the entire field. During post race tech, it was discovered that the car weighed 250 lbs. less than the 2,800 lb. minimum. Somehow, silver-tongued Penske talked his way out of any penalties and kept the win.

Trans Am visits Brainerd in 1969

January 6, 2011 by Gary Grant 5 Comments

Drifting is all the rage with the young crowd these days and some of them think they invented the term “drifting”. In reality, racers have been drifting cars since cars have had enough power to actually spin the wheels. For racers, it is often the fastest way to exit a corner in a rear wheel drive car.

Thanks to the folks at the Canadian Motorsport History Group on Yahoo, I came across this fabulous video of the Trans Am series in the glory days. Shot at Brainerd International, where the Trans Am series raced on the Donnybrooke track on July 6, 1969.

As regular readers will know, my Dad raced an AMX in Ontario in the ’69 season, so I was having a great time looking at the assortment of AMX’s and Javelin’s when something unique sort of jumped out at me. The Penske Donohue Camaro ran with a vinyl roof early in the ’69 season and I think this video is the first I’ve seen of that car in action.

Great video after the break.

The cars I’ve driven

October 28, 2010 by Leighton Irwin Leave a Comment

Over my 70 odd (very) years I have driven many different cars on the road. Some were fun and some were pieces of dung. Many I owned or had long term use of. Others were very short term including the very first Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. Technically it did not exist. VIN 00001. Four 48 IDA Downdraft Webbers and a 5 speed ZF gearbox among other things. It may feature in a later story. My favourite was an Alfa and I will get to that in a bit.

Fritz Hochreuter passes

October 25, 2010 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

I’m sad to report that long time Ontario Porsche racer Fritz Hochreuter on Friday evening. A member of the Deutscher Automobil Club in Toronto, Hochreuter was well known in racing circles far beyond the Ontario racing scene.

From the Sixties through to the Eighties, Hochreuter was a regular competitor in endurance racing at Sebring and Daytona, also competing in the Trans Am series. Most often, he co-drove the long distance events with other Canadians Rudy Bartling and Rainer Brezinka. Hochreuter was also known to build rather impressive Porsche racing engines.

In car video from Elkhart Lake with Mike Skeen

June 22, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

We just love it when Mike Skeen sends out new in car footage. Not only is the soundtrack always awesome, but the driving is pretty exciting too.

This past weekend at Elkhart Lake, the SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series ran in support of the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Skeen started the race on the front row alongside Tony Ave. The in car shows Mike being pushed to the edge of the track in the first turn and the battle to climb back to the top.

Shutter Speed: The continuing brush with greatness

June 8, 2010 by Allan De La Plante 5 Comments

Over the 1974 season I made many new friends in racing among the drivers, the crews, the marshals and the other journalists. There was one other prize I had spotted several years ago and this I wanted. It was the red armband of either the European Racing Press Association(ERPA) or the American Racing Press Association (ARPA). I applied to both. I got a reply from ARPA and was accepted into this exclusive organization. I didn’t get a reply from ERPA. The ARPA application I found out later nearly did not make the cut. I catered mostly to the drivers and the sponsors. I did not work for any particular magazine or newspaper. I did a number of covers and the odd story, but it was the sponsors who paid the big bucks and it was them I geared up for. The letter of acceptance from ARPA was a big day for me. The package arrived with a red leather armband with gold embossed letters and my photograph neatly tucked inside a small window for all to see. I stood in front of the mirror just looking at it on my left arm. At the track I wore it off my belt as it was tight on my arm. I had arrived!

Things are hot at Mosport already

May 21, 2010 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

The May Two Four. Victoria Day Weekend. A sure sign that Spring has arrived in Ontario. The smell of lilacs and racing fuel mix gently in the breeze while the sounds of internal combustion engines threatens the eardrums. Yes, racing has returned to Mosport!

Ken Wilden to run a Corvette in Mosport round of Trans-Am series this weekend

May 19, 2010 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

These days, Canadian racer Ken Wilden is best known as a Ford driver thanks to his efforts in the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge where he is the defending Champion. Wilden’s popularity with Canadian race fans however goes back much farther. Wilden won the Canadian Firehawk series and the wildly popular Player’s GM series back in 1992. Later, he moved on to Formula Atlantic and Trans-Am, where he drove for Jim Derhaag. In fact, Ken and Derhaag Motorsports won the Trans-Am race at Laguna Seca in 2000.

This weekend, Wilden will be piloting one of Derhaag’s Chevy Corvettes at the Mosport round of the SCCA Muscle Milk Trans-Am race. Not only can we expect him to be a front runner, but certainly the fans will be cheering hard for one of their long time favorite drivers.

Gateway Racing arrives at Mosport with complete support services for racers

May 18, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

I’ve been fortunate to have visited a number of race tracks across North America over the past couple of years. One thing that I always notice is when a track has retail facilities catering to racers. I notice it because most of them support visiting racers very well, and my home track has next to nothing. While there has been a race prep shop in the garages at Mosport for the past several years, it wasn’t the retail focused haven for racers like one would find at Lime Rock.

Earlier this year I was excited to hear that there was a new enterprise coming to Mosport and that my old friend Blaise Csida was playing a major part in it. I wasn’t prepared for the level of transformation that has been made to the dingy old space. From the modern, spacious retail facility to the race shop, the place has undergone a complete transformation.
