“International Car Free Day is an annual event celebrated by 100 million people on every continent and supported by the European Union, the United Nations, the Government of Canada and the leaders of 1500 cities around the world.”
Now I’m all for car pooling and mass transit. I love riding my bike and would ride it to work if I could. But let’s face it, I’m a car guy. You greenies will never take away my love of 4 wheeled travel. On another level, there is the reality that here in North America we are spread out. Trains and public transit do not work the same way for all of us here as they do in Europe.
I happen to work in Downtown Toronto and have a 58 km commute each way. On average my drive to work is about 45-50 minutes. If I take the train it takes me 1 1/2 hours door to door. It also costs more than gas! This doesn’t take into account the fact that the train is so jammed on the ride home that most of the time you have to stand up for the whole ride. No thank you.
So go out and smoke a fat one with your other wannabe hippy buddies and celebrate the fact that you didn’t use your car today. I did!
