Smoke show!

Smoke show!

Yes, I missed out on the smoke show that concluded the Indycar race at this year’s Honda Indy Toronto. At that point, I was hanging out with my Dad in Honda’s hospitality suite, enjoying a cool pint or two.

And yes, the Toronto Indy was a month ago. Sorry folks, but I have been crazy busy with stuff over at the Toronto Star’s Wheels.ca and haven’t been able to get on top of my photo editing from the Toronto race.

So, here is a quick gallery of images of the action in Toronto.

In the flurry of activity between the Honda Indy Toronto and the Grand Prix of Mosport, somehow I missed one of the stories our readers love the most! Let’s face it, big race weekends would be much less titillating without the hired hotties to keep us all, ummm, interested.

Without further ado, I present you the guys and gals of the Toronto Indy!

Tough Break For Jason White in Toronto

July 16, 2011 by Todd Lewis Leave a Comment

July 10, 2011. Sun Peaks, British Columbia racer Jason White was hungry for more success in round number five of the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. White had reeled off three consecutive top ten finishes, including a career best sixth place result in his #21 A & W Dodge Challenger and was looking forward to racing on the streets of Toronto during the Indy weekend. Unfortunately that consecutive string came to an end.

It was a difficult start to the race weekend in practice when during the Friday afternoon practice session White had issues with the drive shaft in the #21 A & W Dodge. “It was a mechanical failure” explained White. “It’s unfortunate that it happens and it cost us a lot of practice time on this track” he added.

Ferrari Challenge proves that money does not buy talent

July 15, 2011 by Gary Grant 2 Comments

Just how many lines through 3 do they think there are?

The Ferrari brand has a long and tumultuous history of building consumer race cars. Toys for big boys and fat wallets. The 2011 Honda Indy Toronto saw the first ever Ferrari Challenge race on a true street course, which perhaps explains why Ferrari continues to build race cars for the rich and slow: Ferrari sells parts!

I really, really wanted to like the Ferrari Challenge. Sadly, I’m almost at a loss for words to describe how challenging it was to even watch the Challenge.

It became apparent during Friday’s practice that maybe 5 or 6 of the 24 car field were reasonably fast. The middle portion of the field were decidedly slower, while the aft end were downright pedestrian. Even the presence of superstar driving coaches like Randy Pobst and Richard Spenard did not seem to help. A quick scan of the race results showed a time differential of a whopping 12 seconds a lap between the fast guys and the not so fast guys.

Passions prevail at 25th Toronto Indy

July 14, 2011 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

The 2011 Honda Indy Toronto marked the 25th anniversary of the historic race on the shore of Lake Ontario. There have been high and low points along the way and this year’s event brought an unprecedented level of emotion for the competitors of just about every series. That emotion turned into heated exchanges both on track and off. In other words, the action was hot and heavy and was just what the fans wanted!

The home grown action came in the form of the Castrol Canadian touring Car Championship, where competitors battle it out in production cars not unlike the machines many of us drive to work every day. “battle it out” is a good way to describe the action, as many cars looked like wrecking yard rejects by the end of the weekend.
