Bucky Lasek To Make Rally Debut in 2016

January 14, 2016 by ponycargirl 1 Comment

Speculation confirmed! The 2016 announcements just keep on coming. After spotting Bucky Lasek chasing the Subaru Rally Team across Maine and New Hampshire at the New England Forest Rally in June 2015, it was announced today that Lasek will make his rally debut at Sno*Drift Rally. His co-driver will be Craig Drew, who teamed with David Higgins in 2015 for their sensational Rally America winning sweep.

“Rally has always been one of the gnarliest forms of racing to me and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I can’t express how grateful I am for this opportunity and experience,” explained Lasek. “Sno*Drift will be a bit of a challenge for me as I have very little experience driving in the snow and with pace notes. Luckily I’ll have champion co-driver Craig Drew along my side to guide me and help me get me to the finish.” Higgins will be at the winter rally to coach Lasek in his first rally.

Lasek has driven for Subaru in Red Bull Global Rallycross since 2012, earning three podiums and a “Sportsman of the Year” award for the 2014 season. He will enter Sno*Drift in Super Production class with a Subaru WRX STI.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Sno*Drift will take place January 29-30 in northern Michigan’s Montmorency County, covering 130 miles in 17 snowy, icy rally stages – without studded tires. The first event on the Rally America calendar, the rally attracts a deep field of top national and international teams. Previous years overall winners have included Travis Pastrana / Christian Edstrom (2010), Antoine L’Estage / Nathalie Richard (2013), and repeat wins by Higgins/Drew in 2012, 2014, and 2015. More event information can be found on the Sno*Drift Rally site and Rally America.

With icier roads than anybody has seen in North American rallying, the 2010 edition was expected to provide surprises and excitement. If Day 1 was any indication, than the entire event will live up to expectations.

“It’s like a luge course at the Olympics out here at Sno*Drift…. bumpers and car parts all over the stages. And it’s only stage 4!”

Wow!

How do you drive on ice?

January 29, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

Very carefully!

Earlier this evening we saw some of the top crews at SnoDrift discussing the perils of driving on ice. Afterwards the cameras went out to the start of the shakedown stage and spoke with some of the drivers. While they all had something to say, it is clear that all the drivers are more than a little bit nervous about today’s event. You only have to watch Pastrana, ACP and Mirra attempt to leave the starting line to know that these guys are going to have the toughest drive of their lives today.

As we get news from tonight’s stages we’ll keep you informed.

This year’s SnoDrift Rally has served up roads that look more like a hockey rink than a forest road. Couple that with the complete lack of snow in the ditches and you have some very challenging (not to mention dangerous) conditions. Rally America interviewers spoke with Antoine L’Estage, Nat Richard, Alex Gelsemino, Ken Block and others about their strategy for dealing with the ice.

Ken Block runs Ford Fiesta to flat in 6th on sheer ice

Lest ye think that Daytona is the only game in town this weekend, let me remind you that the SnoDrift Rally is also on tap. Fortunately for the rally community, much attention is being brought to this first big event of the season thanks to Ken Block and the Monster World Rally Ford Fiesta.

After the break we’ve got the first video of Block’s new steed in action. This footage was shot during yesterday’s shake down stage. The Michigan roads have lots of long straights, not to mention 4 legged obstacles. There are a few sections where Block is running flat in 6th for ages, with a top speed of 110 miles per hour. Don’t think that’s fast? Remember that this is on ice and then watch the bumper cam segments again. This is just crazy!

Sno*Drift Rally Pics by Andrew Harvey

Winter is finally here and that means winter rallies, those events that test driver’s skill and co-driver’s stomachs like no other. One of the rally community’s favourite event is the Sno*Drift rally in Michigan. Top shooter Andrew Harvey has a posted a gallery of pics from the 07 event. As always, Andrew’s gallery has so many classic rally images that it’s hard to choose. Should I post a Subaru or Mitsubishi. In the end, what image embodies the sport of performance rally better than a vintage Porsche 911 at full lock?

Be sure to visit Andrew’s post at Flat Over Crest for some stunning work.
