Team California’s Best has loaded Lucky in the trailer and begin the trek to Mexico at 4 am Cali time this morning. Along the way, Gary will try to keep us up to date with a few photos here and there. The really cool thing about this is that we can all keep track of their progress via our phones, using morf mobile. I’ll let Gary tell you how:
Take a few minutes to create your personal mobile site from your computer, you can share it and interact with others - all on your mobile phones.
You also can include other friends in the mobile community by inviting them to join by sending them your mobile site address SMS or your computer?s e-mail. It?s that simple. There is no need to upload software to your phone or pay monthly subscription fees ? it?s free. We recommend that you upgrade to an unlimited data plan from your wireless carrier.
To get started, login on the web at morf mobile
Check it out! If you have questions then go to the HELP information inside the web portal for details on how each feature works. If you have additional questions or comments send them along to: support@morfmobile.com

It’s almost time to slap this pony on the butt and head south of the border to run with some bad hombres. But before I leave I just wanted to thank everyone at THE GARAGE for making Team California’s Best feel right at home. When I was first invited I was told it would be just like hanging out with some friends down at the garage and it has been exactly that for sure.

Please keep an eye on our blog since we will be making another announcement in the next few days when Jon will explain how our new sponsor will make it possible for you to keep up to speed (pun intended) with Lucky and Team California’s Best Racing as we take on the La Carrera Panamericana by utilizing the latest in technology with regards to Social Mobile Networking. In the meantime go ahead and be some of the first to get signed up. It’s easy and it’s free and it is going to be the hottest, newest wave of excitement since the invention of the cell phone. http://teamcbracing.com/signup.html

Heard around the IMPA test days paddock:
The GT500 is too fast, it shouldn’t be here.
That thing is a beast, somebody’s going to hurt themselves in it.
What a handful.
I must admit that it was a little bit strange that the car was there by itself, without a handler. You see, there were 3 cars with true supercar performance in attendance at Pocono Raceway that day. The Viper GTS and the 911 Turbo Cab both had driving instructors firmly planted in the right seat, keeping auto hacks from balling them up. The 500 horsepower Shelby was just handed over to us journo types without a word. You’ve gotta remember that being able to write about cars doesn’t mean that you’ve had any training in how to drive them fast, and 500 hp can make an awful lot of fast.
With those words in mind, I did up my seatbelt, tucked my hat in my backpack and trundled up pit lane, with more than a few butterflies. When the horse and I were waved out onto the track, I peddled slowly and carefully out to the first turn, not wanting to mess up the very pretty steed. Who am I kidding? I hammered that puppy like an old mule! Oh yeah! Man, is this thing fast!

Like everyone else I really enjoy reminiscing old memories especially bench racing with friends about some of those times where all didn’t go as planned.
One such time was back in the late 70’s when I was an active member of the U.S. Olympic International Skeet shooting team. While hosting a weekend international competition at our local club in Palo Alto California there were many good friends and fellow competitors present. Two of them were John Satterwhite my coach and Eva Funes the women’s East German champion. One afternoon after the event had ended for the day John was telling Eva about my GT500 but she had no idea what was special about it. The next day I drove it to the club and John said, “Come on Eva… Hop in the front and Gary will take us for a ride.” It didn’t take long before we were on the freeway moving at a pretty good clip when John said, “Come on Faules, show us what she’s got!”

I am always amazed how much the automobile is a part of our lives not to mention how it influences the things we say and do especially when we were young not at all unlike the youth of today. That being said I’d like to share one such automotive memory I have with you but please understand it is not done with any disrespect. It is simply one experience from the 70s that still cracks me up.

Having never visited a NASCAR style speedway before, I wasn’t quite prepared for the massiveness that is Pocono Raceway. I had been to The Glen years ago after the NASCAR renovation, but that facility is nowhere near the size of the big tri-oval at Pocono. The grandstands must be close to a half a kilometer long!

You wouldn’t coach your kid gymnastics, unless you actually were a gymnast would you? I didn’t think so. Well, while I may have driven performance rally, I’ve never squeezed my behind into a kart so why would I try to teach my kid how to drive. Besides, sometimes there are benefits that come from another person talking to your kid. Let’s face it, a 13 year old girl really doesn’t want to hear what the old man has to say anyway.

Sunday morning dawned dark and stormy, with thunder and lightning on the horizon. On the way to the track, we had spots of heavy rain and the clouds looked to be centered over Mosport, yet there was bright sky directly north. This was an indicator of how our day was to go.

There comes a point in every race car build when the project actually starts to feel like a race car. For many of us, that time is when you can actually sit in it. Well, in a racing seat and not a milk crate!
Gary Faules and his crew have been hard at work getting Lucky ready for the 2007 edition of La Carrera Pananmerica. You can follow their progress at Gary’s build blog.
