Ross Bentley offers up free driving instructor Manifesto

Recently I was more or less forced into the position of being a lapping day instructor. I understand this is often how it happens.

Organizer: We need more instructors. Grab a newbie and go.
Me: Dude, I am so not qualified to be an instructor.
Organizer: Man, I’ve been following you in that Jag. You’re fast as hell, you’ll do fine.
Me: Ummmm….ok, but I’m not promising anything.

Ok, so I don’t know when knowing your way around your home track and the ability to string together a few hot laps became the benchmark for becoming an instructor, but in this particular case, they had more absolute newbies than they had anticipated so a warm body who was able to keep it on the island was going to be enough.

All sorts of interesting things happen during the night at a 24 hour race. Bullet Racing driver Ross Bentley couldn’t find a hanger, so made use of the cork board to dry his nomex stuff.

Nut and bolt checks

As Gary Faules will tell you, the key to winning endurance races is preparation. Part of that preparation means making sure absolutely every nut and bolt is secure before the car heads out on track. The Bullet Racing crew will use some of their free time (if you can call it that) tonight making final checks to be sure the car is ready to go tomorrow.

Doing homework

One rarely hops in a car and is fast right off the bat. Beyond the technical preparations, there are the mental ones and there are always coaching opportunities. Ross Bentley is known for his talent for mentoring younger drivers. Here, he watches video today’s practice sessions with Sean Mcintosh and Darryl O’Young.

The Garage is following the 2010 Rolex 24 at Daytona live via Bullet Racing

January 27, 2010 by Gary Grant 2 Comments

While we’ve grown to cover cool automotive stuff here in The Garage, our roots are in Canadian motorsports. Lately we’ve been bring you a ton of historic content, but let’s not forget that time marches on and Canadians are still out there doing good things and going fast.

This weekend is the annual Rolex 24 hours of Daytona and The Garage has hooked up with the only all Canadian team in the race this year. Bullet Racing is campaigning a Porsche GT3 in the round the clock event and is doing it in the name of the BC Children’s Hospital. The driving squad is made up of team owner Steve Paquette, a long time Porsche racer, Canadian Indycar veteran Ross Bentley, one time Porsche factory driver Kees Nierop, A1 GP driver Sean McIntosh and Porsche Super Cup driver Darryl O’Young. In other words, the depth of talent on this team is substantial!

As a bit of a side note, you may recognize Kees Nierop from our coverage of the Transsyberia Rally over the past couple of years.

Porsche PR type Jimin Yoo will be in the Bullet Racing pit all weekend along with the BR’s Media crew and they will be tweeting updates live throughout the race. They also plan to shoot and share lots of photos and video as the race continues from one day to the next. By the time the cars hit the track, we’ll have the team’s live feed on the sidebar so we can all keep up to date on the team’s progress. We’ll also post photos and video as they become available providing I can stay awake here at home!

After the break we’ll kick things off with a short video from the folks at Grand Am, showcasing a few of the teams racing for charities, with Bullet Racing front and center.
