All those analysts who say we’re in a recession have obviously not been watching the classic Ferrari market. Canadian auction house RM Auctions, worked with Sotheby’s this past weekend in Maranello to set a new world record for the most expensive vintage car sold. $10,894,400 was the winning bid. The car? A 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyer which had been owned by actor James Coburn for 25 years. This wasn’t the only special car however, as 10 other cars sold for more than 1 million dollars!

Sold!

RM Auctions always puts on a great sale in Arizona prior to Barrett Jackson. And the fact that they are housed in Blenheim, Ontario is a plus here at the Canadian Garage. Two cars caught my eye that will go on the block at the “Vintage Cars in Arizona” event to be held on January 18th at the Arizona Biltmore Resort.

One cool looking street rod is Ken “Posies” Fenical’s specially customized 1947 Chevrolet “Fleetliner” Street Rod. A wonderful example of modern styling at its best, this car presents a radical concept of mating the era of streamlining with a modern drive train chassis.

Fawcett Movie Car Auction Results

fawcett-auction.jpg

The results are up for the Fawcett Movie Car auction by RM Auctions and I have to say that I’m more than a little bit bummed that I decided not to bid on anything. The prices that cars went for were, on the whole, beyond cheap.

Being new to the auction world, I don’t pretend to know much about the value of cars, but something strikes me as wrong with these prices. Don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t a field of show cars. With a few dozen exceptions these were indeed movie cars, many in different states of finish. Some had been painted many times, others had been painted with a brush. There were some really decent looking drivers though. Cars that many collectors would be happy to detail, do a bit of maintenance and head to their local cruise night.

Like anything automotive, car auctions mean different things to different people. Some go to dream, others go to fulfill their dreams, some are looking for project ideas, while others are just looking to pass an afternoon. The RM Auctions Fawcett Movie Cars event had something for all of these enthusiasts. This event was quite literally a field of dreams.

Few car enthusiasts manage to make the trip through the town of Whitby without noticing Fawcett Motor Carriage.
