Buick creates the ultimate Mennonite sleeper

August 31, 2011 by Gary Grant 3 Comments

Earlier this Summer, Allan de la Plante spent a week with the already popular new Buick Regal and absolutely loved it. When he headed West after the Toronto Indy, I spent a couple of days wheeling the Regal around town. As great as the car is, I couldn’t help but feel that there was something preventing me from falling in lust with it. With the arrival of the GS model, I am smitten.

Outside, the already sexy exterior has been sportified with the addition of some satin metal trim at the fore and aft ends, more pronounced sill mouldings and a subtle trunk lid spoiler. The most obvious difference from the base model is the optional polished spider web 20″ wheels sporting Summer only performance tires. Our tester on the media launch earlier this week was finished in a striking black metal flake paint, which looks spectacular with the polished spiderweb like wheels.

The Buick Regal

Sometimes I wonder why it is every time I pick up a test car from a manufacturer it’s always a SEDATE four-door sedan! Where the hell are the Corvettes, the Vipers, the Porsche 911s, the David
Saville-Peck Lotus or the M28 McLaren. I know…it’s the senior citizen thing! Do they think that I don’t have a right foot anymore? As I was escorted by Gary Grant…damn that sounds like I need to be cared for, to the General Motors press lot where there sat a nice bright yellow Camaro convertible and a silver Cadillac that looked like it needed some silver-haired-old-buzzard to thrash it around a bit. Right next to them was a rather SEDATE candy-apple-BROWN-four-door Buick Regal. The very nice lady who handles all the press vehicles and the ‘press’ people who want to put the cars through their paces said the Camaro had a minor adjustment needed and would be a several hour wait and the Cadillac was assigned to some other senior citizen reporter that I am sure was about to retire. It was probably Norris MacDonald of the Star. The lucky guy! I didn’t know Cadillac comes with training wheels so Norris can keep it on the road! She said the Buick was ready to go and so was I. The Buick Regal, another SEDATE four-door-sedan…NOT!

Review: 2011 Buick Regal Turbo

Before we begin, the Buick Regal you see above is actually a rebadged Opel Insignia, a car designed, and built in Germany. Why the need to tell you this first? Well, there are those in the automotive press crying foul, that GM has learned nothing from its mistakes of the past. Readers, listen to me-this is not a return to the Cavalier/Sunbird/Firenza/Skyhawk/Cimmaron travesty of the 1980’s. In fact, I see no reason to fuss at all. For crying out loud, the Opel Insignia is not even sold in North America. So, should any car buyer even care that the Regal is actually a German Opel? Well, that depends…read on!

Buick Announces Prices for ’11 Regal

Is it possible that Buick is on a roll here? Sure, we were impressed with the new LaCrosse, and concluded that Buick was heading in the right direction in seeking a younger demographic, as in an audience that is not a senior citizen. Buick is redefining itself, and we are excited about the new 2011 Regal. For such a modern looking car, I am a little surprised Buick kept the Regal name, which is more familiar as a lousy airport rental car than anything special.

But that’s a gamble Buick is prepared to take. The 2011 Regal CXL will feature a 2.4L Ecotec engine rated at 182hp, priced at $26,995USD. There will also be a CXL Turbo with a 2.0L Ecotec engine rated at an estimated 220hp priced at $29,495. Buick claims only a six-speed automatic, but there have been rumors that a manual tranny could make its way into the Regal.
