Video: Transsyberia Rally keeps on truckin

ts-rally-border.jpg

Following a ten hour wait at the Russian border on Friday, teams finally made their way in to Mongolia. During the 43.5 mile transit section to the camp at Oelgy, several teams had to stop to change tires. Even though it was a transit, the road was so rocky that tire punctures were commonplace. Yesterday was a well needed day of rest and the competitive stages continue today.

Transsyberia Rally: The trek continues

m08_0053.jpg

The field of 33 vehicles continues it’s race across Syberia, having dodged animals and crossed rivers on their way to today’s check point in Omsk. The rally leader continues to be Armin Schwarz and Hilger Oliver in a Porsche Cayenne.

The above photo shows Canadians Kees Neirop and Lawrence Yap navigating the river on day 2. Fortunately, they seem to have made it across, which not all teams can say. There were several vehicle failures in the river, ranging from electrical problems to a blown engine.

Race shooter: Jim Culp

ferrari-512s.jpg

Since getting the new camera, I’ve spent a lot of time exploring the wonder that is Flickr and in the process I’ve come across some pretty incredible photographers. Today I found Jim Culp of ProRallyPix. Jim’s got an incredible body of work, spanning 4 decades and ranging from road racing to rally and vintage footage.

The shot above is a Ferrari 512 S shared by Ignazio Giunti and Arturo Merzario in the 1970 Nurburgring 1000 race.

You can see more of Jim’s work on his Flickr page or ProRallyPix.com

Friday 13th: Riders head to Port Dover

pd13.jpg

It all began in 1981 when a group of bike riding buddies decided to get together at a local bar in Port Dover on Friday the 13th. They had such a good time that they decided to hook up every Friday the 13th. Today is the 45th Friday the 13th since that day and the small town of Port Dover can expect literally thousands of riders to descend upon their town, even as I’m writing this. It’s going to be a beautiful day, so if you’ve got access to a bike of any kind, skip out of work and head to the lakeside town of Port Dover Ontario.

More details from Nick Morley

Yesterday we received a comment from the family of Nick Morley. In it, a good chunk of the haze surrounding the crash that occurred in Macedonia during the Gumball event has been cleared up. I thought it was worth posting on it’s own, as it’s too valuable to be lost in the comments section.

As we’ve said before, this case is an important landmark for the rally community. I can’t recall if there has ever been such a high profile situation where a competitor has been involved with a non competitors vehicle. It’s a shame that someone somewhere seems bent on setting a false example of a member of our community.

Letter after the break.

Driver of crashed Gumball Porsche, Nick Morley released

Nick Morley, driver of the Porsche that was involved in a tragic accident that killed 2 people in Macedonia has been convicted of dangerous driving causing death. In a strange twist, officials have given his a 2 year suspended sentence and will be allowed to leave the country. The whole case appears to have been strangely mishandled, which may have as much to do with the need to make rallyists look criminal as it does with the unusual legal system in Macedonia. It is unlikely that we will ever learn the truth regarding what happened that day.

Once again, our thoughts go out to Cepuljoski family and to Nick Morley.

Honey, I shrunk the Soobie

Over the past few months, Andrew Harvey has been playing with some funky new lenses or something, which have given many of his shots some really different perspectives. A cool example is the Subaru above, taken at the 35th running of the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally last weekend in Pennsylvania. Be sure to visit Flat Over Crest for a bunch more killer shots.
