The Garage Flickr Pool: Helmut marko’s Porsche 917

martini-and-rossi.jpg

I really need to delve into the Flickr pool more often to liven things up here in The Garage, so I can offer a bit more variety. The problem is that there are so many great images, and yet I continually go back to the work of Flickr user Nigel Smuckatelli.

His real name is Louis Galanos and he spent some time toting a lens around Sebring and Daytona back in the golden years. It’s fortunate for us that Louis took the time, because his work is just incredible.

The car above is the Porsche 917k campaiged by the Martini & Rossi team for Helmut Marko and Rudi Lins in the 1971 24 hours of Daytona. The car did not finish.

Be sure to visit The Garage on Flickr, where there are just too many great photos to show here.

This week in The Garage Flickr pool: Porsche 917

There have just been so many submissions to The Garage’s Flickr pool over the past week that I don’t know where to begin. There are photos from all sorts of genre, from motorsports to rust & from old to new.

Rodriguez-Oliver-917K

I’ve chosen this shot of the Porsche 917 that Pedro Rodriguez and Jackie Oliver drove to victory at Daytona, taken by Nigel Smuckatelli. The cool thing about Nigel’s work is that he worked as a safety official at Daytona and Sebring in the late 60’s and early 70’s and took his camera along for the ride. Some of the pit and track images in Nigel’s photo stream are just incredible. Revson, Mcqueen, Andretti, Gregg are just a few of the drivers he has candid footage of.

Of special note to us here in The Garage are some shots of a Corvette that I believe a young Gary Faules may have crewed for.

There will be bonus points for the reader who can tell me which car in Nigel’s photos was piloted by a bunch of Ontarians, one of whom was the inventor of the serpentine belt!

Laser 917 Kit Car Rebirth

laser.jpg

Over in the Zentastic Garage, Shannon Larratt has dug out one of his old projects, a Laser 917 kit car. After years of sitting in a corner somewhere, the Porsche 917 replica is set to have a complete reworking. Updated headlights and a more streamlined windshield will be just the beginning from the sounds of things. For now, the car has been brought home for the initial clean up. Currently without a powerplant, Mr. Larratt is looking for a reasonably price (can you say free?) beetle engine to drop in, just to get the car moving. Regular readers may remember Shannon, he’s the guy with the camoflage painted Porsche 911. I’m sure we can expect the same type of cool when the Laser is finished.

Speed Shifting

As sometimes happens when things pile up around The Garage, it’s time to go into speed Shifting mode.

Over at Classical Drive, Phillip must have checked his mail today and found the same same glossy flyer I did. The master bathroom looks a little brighter today with the RM Auction Fall Classic auction book.

We’ve all seen those Cobra couches, but over at Autoblog they’ve found an even cooler bit of furniture. Delight your inner Steve with one of these awesome Porsche 917 inspired seating devices.

Marc at Full Throttle has a primer for this weekend’s Lexmark Indy 300 Down Under.

Back in the USSR, or the former…or whatever they call it these days, the Jalopnik crew has a cool Russian Rod.

Fall is football season and Ask Patty has the goods on what it takes to have a great tailgate party. We’re going to have to try the Tamale Pie.

In the Auto Park they somehow beat me to the latest news about the Nissan 350Z GT-S.

Motor Authority has an interesting list of their fave Homologation specials. You know, those cars that are built to justify the race cars. Somehow they’ve missed a few cool ones. The Shelby Cobra and the road going GT-40 are just two that come to mind.

1973 Mosport CanAm program

1973 canam mosport smaller.jpg
The image on this program became an icon in Canadian beer and motorsports marketing and I think they used the format for several years. I still have a beer opener with the logo on it. Labatt’s, along with Players were the top supporters of motorsports in Canada and of Canadian driver’s around the world. The front row at the start of this race was Mark Donohue in a Porsche 917/30 on pole, with Jody Scheckter in a 917/10 beside him. Eventual winner was Charlie Kemp from Jackson Mississipi in another 917/10.
