If you’ve never been to a professional level race, you owe it to yourself to visit one. There really is nothing like the sights, sounds and smells of car racing. Maybe the best event of all time is the annual Champ Car World Series visit to the Toronto waterfront. While the event is easily the favorite race of most teams, it might be one of the best for fans as well.

Regular readers of The Garage are going to think I’ve lost my mind. I’ve moved around so much since we created this little project that it has to confuse folks. Let’s see. Within the last 18 months there has been Nissan, Mazda, Nissan again, Infiniti and now….Mitsubishi.

The 3rd concept from Mazda to use their new Nagare design philosophy is called Hakaze. This cross-over will be aimed at active 30-40 somethings who like to go topless! Really, the rear roof section will be removable to all for al fresco motoring. Very nice. Can’t wait to see this one!

Mazda has just released a teaser of a new concept design called the Nagare. Not much has been said about the actual vehicle, rather they are talking about the design. Apparently this new concept draws from the word flow and should be an indication of the direction Mazda is taking for the future.

It really wasn’t so long ago that many people doubted the idea of a hydrogen powered car. I even recall the odd Hindenburg joke. As often happens, reality is stranger than fiction and here we are with a Hydrogen Mazda.
Mazda has delivered a dual fuel RX-8 to the local government in Yamaguchi, Japan where Mazda’s Hofu plant and Mine Proving Ground are located. This vehicle is being used for special events and daily use. One would assume that special events would include promotion of clean driving vehicles.

Mazda’s new crossover SUV the CX-7 has just received the highest possible crash test ratings for all tests. In NHTSA testing, the CX-7 received a 5 star rating in frontal and side impact tests. It also received a 4 star rating for it’s roll over test. These are the highest ratings available for an SUV, and have never been acheived by any currently available competitor. Mazda must be proud, this is one tough cookie.

A few weeks ago, Ed over at The Car Blog wrote a piece on Why Wagons Rock, detailing why the practicality of wagons has won him over. Well, here in The Garage, we couldn’t agree more. In fact I’m a little surprised that it’s taken so long for so many folks to come to the realization that wagons (or some SUVs by extension) are indeed cool. As one who spent years working for Volvo, with all their boxy, turbo monster wagons I figured this out way back in the early Eighties. There is no reason why a wagon can’t be practical and a blast to drive at the same time.
Enter the Mazda 6 Sport Wagon. Over the past couple of months we’ve racked up about 9,000 km on a pair of these haulers. The first was equipped with the 3.0 l V6 and a 5 speed manual transmission, while the second utilized the same engine coupled to the optional 6 speed automatic. The automatic is tuned for the sporting driver and has a manual shift option. Personally, I’ve never been excited by manumatics so this feature didn’t get much use but it did seem to work smoothly. Just not my thing.
This engine is rated for 212 hp and 197 ft/lb of torque which was more than enough to turn the front tires to smoke off the line when the driver’s inner hooligan is released and sometimes when you’ve got your jacket and tie on too. Everyone who drove the car while in our stable commented that the front tires will squeel when leaving a light, even under moderate throttle. Odd, considering the big sticky boots the Sport Wagon wears.

They say that the Cougar Ace is as water tight as a ziploc baggie and that 4,700 Mazdas aren’t headed to Davy Jones locker. It seems that a ballast adjustment gone awry is what caused the ship to tip. While the extent of the damage isn’t known, it would seem likely that there is little if any damage to the vehicles. Ocean going cargo ships are designed to withstand some pretty big waves, that often roll ships up on their side momentarily and cargo (like cars) are usally secured in anticipation of this. I suspect that there will be more damage while they figure out how to unload. Let’s face it, they’re going to need something a lot bigger than what Bob’s Towing can offer to pull this thing upright.
