Lincoln Remains off the Mark

AutoNews recently reported that Lincoln is considering a smaller, premium model in addition to its current lineup. No details have been released, and it is not clear how serious Lincoln is about heading into such a segment, an area they have never approached before.

If Lincoln has shown us anything over the past decade, it has been consistency. By that, I mean uninspiring, uninteresting cars that few enthusiasts have any real interest in. How about offering automotive answers to questions no one ever asked? Does anyone recall the Blackwood? How Lincoln thinks it can solve its problems with a small premium car, I have no clue. What car would this proposed vehicle compete against?

In the 1980’s both Cadillac and Lincoln were more or less on par with each other, in that they generally offered weak, thirsty V-8 powered cars with poor quality to boot. The Greatest Generation bought these cars up as fast as they could, so why improve them? Lincoln showed promise with the Mark VII LSC, powered by the Ford Mustang GT’s 302 V-8. I tested one of the last Mark VIII LSC’s, and I was stunned at all the comments I got about the car during my week with it. A great tourer, I was comfortable blasting down the Pennsylvania Turnpike, or sitting in NYC traffic in rush hour. Then Lincoln discontinued the car.

Not Your Grandmother’s Car

It has been the fodder of comedians for many years to tell jokes about the little old lady in Florida who can barely see over the steering wheel of her Lincoln as she crawls down Collins Avenue. Well, Ford isn’t joking as they try to tell the public in 2008 that a Lincoln is not your grandmother’s car.

On Wednesday, Ford introduced Lincoln’s new flagship sedan, the MKS, at the LA Auto Show.

Ford’s crossover twins leading the way in sales

07edge_sales.jpg

The first time I saw a new Ford Edge, I thought it looked like a clever copy of Nissan’s successful Murano. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that Ford outdid Nissan in the style department. This is one great looking vehicle.

It would appear that the consumers agree with me, as sales of the Edge and it’s upscale sibling the Lincoln MKX are soaring. In fact, in May new car buyers bought more of the Edge than any other crossover including the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander or the Nissan Murano! They are doing so well that sales are 20% ahead of Ford’s own predictions.

Warren Buffett’s Lincoln to be auctioned for charity

csamp_top.jpg

America’s 2nd richest man is apparently dividing up a big chunk of his 32 billion dollar fortune between 5 charities. Along with dishing out the cash, he’s unloading auctioning his personal ride on e-bay, with proceeds going to Girls Inc.

Now I know that Buffett has done an unbelievable job building a fortune and has built a reputation as a penny pincher, but there has to be something wrong with a billionaire whose personal ride is an 01 Lincoln. Talk about lame, it even comes with snow tires! To ensure that bidders spend a few hun more than a regular auto trader purchase, Buffett’s personalized plate comes with the car. The high bidder can claim to be THRIFTY after spending too much money for a crappy used up car, that is sure to lose value right off the block. It’s a good thing the money is going to a great cause.
