West coast contributor to The Garage Aaron Von Minden has a sweet new toy. This 49 Mercury is a solid, rust free beast that is all original. It even has the original flathead. Watch The Garage over the next few months as this project progresses, as Aaron has big plans in store.

From the archives at Savage Speed, come a few old images, but they’re new to The Garage. As regular readers know, I’ve been bitten by the old skool rod bug and Aaron VonMinden is determined to get me building. I’m starting to think about the upcoming kart racing season, but I’m still planning on keeping my eyes open for a chassis and a body of sorts. I’ll know what I’m looking for when I see it. For now though, I want to share this latest bunch of pics Aaron has sent our way.
One of racings’ most historic tracks, Mosport may be close to The Garage, but these guys get to go play at Bonneville. Too cool.

From sunny Cali, land of the hot rod comes the artwork of Tom Fritz. This guy creates the most incredible images of hot roads, land speed racers and old school bikes. If you are lucky enough to be visiting Barrett-Jackson next week, you can get some great deals on some of Tom’s work.

So here I was, checking e-mail and minding my own business when that Aaron guy sent me even more teasers to get me wound up on this quest for a totally irrational new project. The proprietor of Savage Speed is showing of his new roadster project, which is powered by nothing less than a Caddy flathead. If I’m not incorrect, this is the same Caddy mill that did time at Bonneville before finding it’s way into Aaron’s living room.

Regular readers of The Garage know that I have a love of sports cars and a long history with cars that turn left and right. The hot rod scene has never really been on my radar until I visited a local car show a couple of years ago and discovered Rat Rods. The new twist on old skool hot rodding really caught my interest. For me, it’s all about the killer style, coupled with a big engine with open pipes. Over the past couple of years, I’ve been quietly watching the rodding scene from a distance and the style is becoming addictive to me.

One of the things I love about The Garage is that I’ve come to learn about (and in some cases meet) some incredibly cool people who are just as entrenched in the car hobby as I am. Coop is one of those guys. An artist who is heavily involved in the SoCal Hot Rod culture, Coop is one of those rare individuals who is actually able to help mould the culture.
