They say capital punishment is on hold in California. Lethal injection is being called cruel and unusual punishment. I guess the court overlooked the one loophole in the law that allowed a 1995 Honda Civic hatchback to be executed in Long Beach last month.
California authorities destroyed a 1995 Honda Civic that belonged to 18-year-old Clifford Sung, a few weeks after he was arrested in Long Beach for having a vehicle with an illegal engine. This is the first time in Long Beach’s history that an illegally modified car has been crushed.

It’s been a tough week for Racer Journalists, as two prominent writers have been injured in heavy car crashes.
Firstly, the legendary Paul Frere sustained serious injuries in a heavy collision in a Honda Civic R while testing near the Nurburgring. A former Formula 1 and sports car racer, Frere has a talent for turning the automotive experience into words. As a contributing editor to Road and Track, the 89 year old has delighted enthusiasts the world over with his reviews of some of the world’s most exotic machinery. Reports are that the prognosis looks good for Frere to return home soon.

Those car crazy folks over at Kelly Blue Book have released their list of the top cars for back to school. Reading parents and kids were surveyed as to which of 15 cars they would like to see their kids driving to school. The average price of each car was in the neighbourhood of 10 grand. The college age drivers chose the 2001 Mustang as their ride of choice, while parents chose the 2001 Honda Civic as the best ride for their spawn. Interestingly, the Civic was also number 3 on the college driver’s list, so perhaps it could be crowned the overall winner.
What I want to know is where were these parents when I was in High School. Most of us drove beaters or worn out old grandparents cars and they suited us just fine. I’d love to have my ‘69 Fury back again!

Kelly Blue Book has released a list of the Top 20 cars that have been researched by consumers in the first half of 2006. KBB is the most respected source of car research data, owing to the fact that their site generates so much traffic. This List was compiled through over 60 million unique visits and over 200 million price quotes.
1. Honda Civic
2. Honda Accord
3. Toyota Camry
4. Toyota Corolla
5. Toyota Rav4
6. Honda Odyssey
7. Honda Pilot
8. Toyota Highlander
9. Chevrolet Tahoe
10. Honda CRV
11. Ford Mustang
12. Nissan Altima
13. BMW 325
14. Acura TL
15. Toyota Sienna
16. Toyota 4Runner

It’s interesting to note that Toyota holds 7 spots and Honda products take 6 spots. Is this an indication of sales trends, or are their customers more web aware? Perhaps it’s a bit of both.

Over at Top Speed they have listed the Top Ten cars for Making Love. Of course this is a european list, so most of the cars aren’t available on North American soil.
1. Fiat Stilo
2. Seat Leon
3. Fiat Grande Punto
4. VW Golf
5. Ford Focus
6. Renault Twingo
7. Honda Civic
8. VW Fox
9. Ford Fiesta
10. Renault Clio
Just like Travolta said in Pulp Fiction, it’s the difference between “here” and Europe is the little things. In my eyes, there is no way that any of those cars qualify as a Love Machine. My best ever Love Machine was either the double bed sized bench seats in my 69 Plymouth Fury 2, or the folded down back seats of my 79 Dodge Monaco wagon.
What was your favourite Love Machine?

The much anticipated 3 door Civic will roll onto the world stage at this year’s London auto show next month. The new hatch will be built in Swindon, Wiltshire, along with the Type R and the 5 door. This thing looks cool.
