Auto Express pits Nissan Juke R against GT-R on track

March 19, 2012 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

There are few things cooler than a real skunkworks concept car. Essentially that means a bunch of car manufacturer’s engineers go underground and build their ultimate version of a road car, often without the knowledge of their superiors. Such was the case with the Nissan Juke R, which was mated with a GT-R to create the most ungodly crossover known to motoring kind.

Since the unveiling, there are few cars that auto journos have wanted to drive. The good folks at Auto Express have managed to get an afternoon with the matte black beastie and put it to the test against Godzilla. The track time battle is surprisingly close and you can see it after the break.

Newbie fail at the drag strip

August 5, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

Before I say anything, watch the video.

Skyline GTR drag strip fail.

Once we all quit giggling at this doofus’ blunder, let’s think about what just happened. A first time drag racer lined up at the start of his first race in his new supercar. When his more experienced competitor began heating the tires of his heavily modified sub-compact, our newbie misunderstood and launched the car down the track.

In road racing, it is pretty much universal that no driver goes on the track without some sort of schooling. I’m assuming the oval track folks have a similar procedure, though maybe not as the speeds on most short tracks is negligible in most cars. The reason for this training is to ensure that there is as little potential for injury as possible. Not only is the safety of the driver being protected, but so is that of the course workers.

From what I understand, most drag strips allow people to show up and run down the strip. That’s obviously the case with this schmo, as he had no clue what would happen when he got to the line.

He’s driving a vehicle capable of reaching 60 mph from a standing start in 3.4 seconds, does the 1/4 in the mid 11’s and 120 mph*. Most strips require a helmet and harnesses for cars capable of sub 12 second runs, and yet someone let this guy out on the strip when he didn’t know what to expect! Was he wearing a helmet? Who knows, the tint was too dark to tell.

I hope there were no track workers sweeping somewhere on the track, as they would have had the stuffing scared out of them at least.

The point I’m making here is that it doesn’t matter what the venue is, drivers should not be allowed into a competitive environment unless they have been taught at least the very basics of the sport. I’ve never even been to a real drag race, yet I have a pretty good idea of the starting process thanks to a modern invention called television. If this dude had kicked the bucket, or worse killed a worker, the track owners would be in deep, deep doo!

*note: I mention these numbers as this is what the car is reportedly capable of. No, I don’t think our subject would likely attain those numbers, but that is beside the point.

Each year the depth of talent at Canada’s incredible Targa Newfoundland grows with ever increasing manufacturer involvement.

Nissan has just announced that motorsport legend Steve Millen will campaign a Stillen prepared GT-R at the 2009 event on The Rock. Riding shotgun will be Road & Track’s Mike Monticello.

Road & Track is documenting the Godzilla build with a series of videos that you can see at Road & Track. Also, swing by the build blog at Stillen.

Nissan unleashes GT-R SpecV

January 10, 2009 by Gary Grant 2 Comments

Whenever a new hot rod launches, the aftermarket goes nuts building performance and styling bits for it. Soon after, the manufacturer often ups the ante with their own hotter version. With just under a year of public consumption under the belt of their GT-R, Nissan has revealed the SpecV version of their all wheel drive weapon.

Sporting just 2 seats and carbon fiber everything, the SpecV takes the already serious GT-R and turns it into a track day monster aimed at owners who intend to really use the car on the track. Interesting that along with weight management and performance tweaks, that they haven’t included safety upgrades (like a roll cage) to make the car truly track ready.

Funny thing is that the photo above supplied with the press release shows the SpecV in red, but the car is only available in Black Opal.

Sadly, it will not be available in North America for the time being.

See the black car and full press release after the break.

Jay Leno is a lucky guy. Not only has he built a career doing something he loves, but he’s earned the right to gain access to the world’s coolest cars. What more could a guy want? In this latest video release from the Big Dog Garage, Jay gets to put the 2009 Nissan GT-R through it’s paces. He may have been on the street, but just watch how quickly Godzilla snaps Leno’s sizable melon back when he stamps on the loud pedal!

For many Canadian Nissan enthusiasts it almost seems like a dream. The legendary GT-R, Godzilla, will soon be available at our dealerships. Not some ratty old JDM import either, the real deal. The 2009 Nissan GT-R.

Earlier today, Nissan Canada announced which dealerships have been selected to retail the GT-R here. If you’ve just got to have your very own monster, now you know where you can put down your deposit from coast to coast.

For those of you who just want to oogle the beast, you can do that too!

Sellers Market

It might be time to head out to look at the Porsche 911 if you had any thought of going into your Nissan dealer and plunking around 70 thou down for the 2008 GT-R. The Japanese automaker is looking at each unit like a bar of gold.

The company plans on selling only 2,400 worldwide, with 1500 destined for American shores. It seems like a lot of hungry super car buyers are going to be waiting at the dock.

Nissan GT-R puts in an appearance at Goodwood

Attention all Nissan enthusiasts! The GT-R has made a real life public appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Ok, so it’s still sporting front and rear bras, but those bras look to be holding up some pretty special goodies. The GT-R has been the source of tons of spy shots as the car is developed, so it looks like Nissan is once again choosing to show off a new model prior to it’s official launch.
