Mika Hakkinen becomes ambassador for MobileKids

1058167MobileKids_2__mid.jpg

Two time Formula 1 World Champion and two time dad Mika Hakkinen and DaimlerChrysler have teamed up with a new project called MobileKids. Aimed at kids and teens, MobileKids teaches kids how to be smart on the road, from seatbelt use to helmet use when riding a bike. This is a great program, now if they can just figure out a way to get all those parents out there to teach by example, all of our kids would be safer.

Villeneuve spouts off at Schumacher again

Jacques-Villeneuve.jpg

Never one to hold his tounge, Jacques Villeneuve has revealed his opinion on Michael Schumacher. In an interview for the upcoming issue of F1 Racing, Villeneuve has essentially said that Schumi is a deceptive, no personality dirtbag that the world will forget about when he’s gone. JV actually goes so far as to compare Mikey to the late, great Ayrton.

On the Ayrton topic, you have to give JV credit. Senna was up front about it when he planned to stuff someone. Mikey plays dumb, thinking the whole world doesn’t get it. What get’s me is where does JV get off thinking the world is going to remember him? Sure, he has more personality that Schumacher, but in some cases that may not be a good thing. Jacques has pissed off a lot of people, not only in the sport, but more importantly the fans. In reality, how many people outside Quebec will remember his name for anything other than his father’s son? The world has definately forgotten about the Uncle Jaques. Maybe they can race snowmobiles together!

Cleaning out The Garage part deux

So a few more things and then The Garage feed reader will be reset.

Jensen Button won his first Formula 1 race, an eventful affair in Hungary. It’s been a long time coming. Meanwhile, Villeneuve’s F1 career seems to be nearing it’s end.

Norris Macdonald at The Star has some interesting comments about Jacques options.

Sarah Fisher is getting another shot at IRL. Maybe she can take some of the spotlight away from that also ran Danica.

Nissan is invading the Anime world with starring roles in the Ghost in the Shell series

Autoblog speaks with James Glickenhaus about his stunning new one off Ferrari P4/5

Maybe best of all, the BBC has offered up Top Gear downloads for free on their own site!

There is so much more that I can’t possibly read or post it all. We are cleaning up now & tomorrow’s news will be all new.

No more Cossie for Williams

cosworth_ford_dfv1.jpg

It’s been close to 40 years since Cosworth started building engines for Grand Prix cars, specifically for Matra and Lotus. Now, British Formula 1 team Williams has confirmed that their cars will no longer be using Cosworth power. Williams have entered a 3 year contract with Toyota to run the same engine as powers the Toyota F1 car. This leaves only the Torro Rosso entry using Cosworth engines.

Cosworth Engines have scored World Championships with Graham Hill and Michael Schumacher, but have not scored a race win since Fisichella wond the Brazilian GP in 2003.

Montoya leaving F1 for NASCAR

montoya-f1.jpg

Here I was, minding my own bidness, napping on the mother in law’s couch, when the news flashed on the TV. Colombian racing superstar is leaving his cushy gig in Formula 1, for the chicken and ribs atmosphere of NASCAR. I figured I could cruise home and blog about it before anyone else caught the news. Damn…those guys at Jalopnik are on the ball, they beat me to it. What’s even worse is they grabbed their info from TSN, the Canadian sports TV channel. To get all the news, visit TSN, but the short version is…get ready to cry in yer beer good ole boys. The guy from the real south is gonna whip some ‘merican butt!

I found this cool Sunoco ad in the program for the Mac’s Continental program from Mosport in September 1970. I think this pic of”Captain Nice” pretty much sums up the reputation Mark Donohue had. A family guy who also happened to be one of the best racers who ever lived.

The Mac’s Continental weekend featured Formula A, B & C. Formula A was for Formula 1 style cars with 5.0 liter V8 engines which grew into what most of us know as Formula 5000. The starting grid included names like David Hobbs, Dick Smothers (of Smothers Brothers fame), George Follmer and of course Captain Nice himself. Also of note are some of Canada’s most important drivers, Bill Brack, Horst Kroll, John Cannon and Ludwig Heimrath. Some American readers may remember his son, Ludwig Heirath Jr. who made a few failed attempts at the Indy 500 back in the Eighties.
