Race cars, Le Mans and Captain Picard = A Winner!

March 26, 2014 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

journey

I’m not sure exactly how I missed this video when it was released a couple of months ago, but it has all the makings of a winner.

The upcoming movie Journey to Le Mans follows British privateer team Jota Sport as they prepare for the ultimate challenge in auto racing: the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Narrated by non-other than Sir Patrick Stewart, himself a racing enthusiast, the dramatic trailer does its best to excite the viewer about the team’s efforts to conquer the legendary race.

As slick as it is, personally I would love to see some behind the scenes action and interviews but I would expect we’ll see that stuff in the movie.

The legend of the buried GT-40

September 7, 2010 by Gary Grant 14 Comments

The automotive world is full of legends and icons. Where is Detective Frank Bullitt’s Mustang? How come death follows James Dean’s Lil Bastard? Isn’t there a GT40 buried somewhere in Sebring? Like the other stories, the buried GT-40 legend was born out of an energy filled time. Unfortunately it was also conceived of a tragic death, much like Lil Bastard.

Walt in the Wet

April 15, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

We’ve seen lots of great in car footage of the legendary Walter Rohrl over the years here in The Garage. There has been uphill, downhill, pavement and gravel. Porsche, BMW and Audi. Two wheel driven and four. I don’t think however that we’ve ever been blessed with footage of him in the wet.

Not only is Rohrl one of Porsche’s official test drivers, but he likely has more laps of the Nurburgring under his belt than anyone else, alive or dead. In 2010 24 hour race at The Green Hell in May, Rohrl will be sharing a stock 911 GT3 RS with DTM legend Roland Asch and journalists Horst von Saurma-Jeltsch and Chris Harris. Part of the reason Porsche has such a winning history is testing, testing and more testing.

With a need to ensure the stock car is up to the rigours of endurance racing, you can be sure that Porsche has Rohrl running many, many laps of The Ring in as many different conditions as possible. In the excellent in car video after the break, we see the master at work in the rain.

Corvette Racing Series: Episode 2, The Perfect Storm

March 26, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

The whole team at Corvette Racing had high hopes leading into the 2010 ALMS season opener at Sebring. Finally there was some competition for the Corvettes and the team was going to have to work hard to get to the podium. As everything who watched the race knows, the race didn’t go as planned. In fact, it was about as bad an outing as they could have had, with uncharacteristic equipment failures and then a monumental pit lane error that caused a collision between the two Vette’s on pit lane.

As any successful team does though, they are planning to review the event and learn from their mistakes to hopefully ensure they don’t happen again. I’d be willing to bet that the second round will be a whole different ball game for Corvette.

Our videographer friend JF Musial has outdone himself yet again. He has just completed this stunning video from practice sessions for today’s 12 hour race at Sebring. In this short we see the Flying Lizard team in action and follow Hans Hermann as he takes a lap in his Porsche RS60, the same car he raced to win at Sebring in 1960.

Coverage of the ALMS 12 hours in on Speed TV today at 10 am est and then from 2 pm until 11 pm.

Corvette Racing Series: Episode 1

March 19, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago we showed you a nicely produced propaganda piece from Corvette Racing that was more or less developed to justify their existence to the naysayers. Today, we have the first of 12 videos following the team through the 2010 racing season. This one is equally well produced and actually has a bit more meat to it.

As teams are getting ready for qualifying at the 12 Hours of Sebring today, you can be sure that the Vette people have the cameras rolling non-stop. It will be very interesting to see how the Vette’s perform in GT2 this weekend against the beefed up competition.

Corvette Racing visits Sebring to shake down new ride

March 2, 2010 by Gary Grant 2 Comments

Late Winter is a wonderful time for racing enthusiasts in cold climates. The roundy round guys and girls are already racing in the warmer parts of the south, which gives us something to watch on TV rather than shoveling the driveway and teams that start later in the season are out testing new cars.

Corvette Racing has new cars this year as they are campaigning the the ALMS GT2 series rather than GT1 where they have dominated for years. The first race of the season is the 12 hours at Sebring on March 20 so it makes sense for the team to pound some laps in Florida leading up to the event. Sebring is known for its rough concrete with expansion joints that hammer the suspension and drivetrain, so the more laps they turn there the better. This way, the team should know exactly what will fail and be prepared or even redesign parts before the race.

We’ve got a huge gallery after the break.

More racers ingenuity

February 5, 2010 by Gary Faules 1 Comment

One year during the 25 Hours Of Thunderhill for us California boys it was cold as hell and keeping my gloves and racing shoes dry was a must. It was only 30 degrees but the wind was terrible, blowing sideways and never letting up as the rain began to turn into sleet and snow. Of course we can’t have any type of heaters but we can have lights and anyone who has used halogen lamps know they get pretty hot.

The old girl is looking a little rough around the edges

February 1, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

During the closing ceremonies at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Jimin Yoo too advantage of the relative quiet in pit lane to do a bit of a walk-a-round of the Bullet Racing Porsche 911 GT3. From the beaten and torn bumper covers to the busted lights and exhaust, the poor beast is looking a little bit tired. That front bumper will look pretty cool on the shop wall though!
