Catch the fever, go racing in Ontario

June 1, 2012 by Media press release 3 Comments

Racing, you watch it on TV. You accelerate through the on-ramp thinking about the F1 race you just watched. When you have been pulled over and the red lights are flashing in your rear veiw mirror, you just sigh and think that only if you were on the autobahn this would not have happened. Or if you had purchased that 3 cylinder slowpoke instead of the V8 or turbo-charged adreneline inducing machine that you are currently driving – or rather, sitting in patiently while receiving a ticket.

It is time for a lifestyle change. For less than the cost of one speeding ticket (not counting insurance hikes) you can sign up for a day at the race track with Ontario Time Attack, a division of CASC-OR. Yes, this is the same CASC-OR that hosts many of the races that occur on Canadian soil at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (formerly known as Mosport) and even in downtown Toronto at the Indy.

What instructors really want to say to the Nightmare Track Day Student. NSFW

September 17, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

A few months ago, we introduced you to that fellow we all know: the Nightmare track day student. That wonderful little creation detailed how the conversation often goes when instructors encounter an overly difficult student.

We all know the instructor in that case was on his best behavior. Now, thanks to the creative mind of youtube user blahblahblah55209 we can hear what he really thought!

Video after the break is very NSFW, nor should the kiddies be anywhere within earshot.

Fat guys CAN drive formula cars!

July 24, 2010 by Gary Grant 4 Comments

As part of the lead up to the Honda Indy Toronto, Bridgestone organized a series of events for the media to experience their products in action. One of these events was a day at the Bridgestone Racing Academy on Mosport’s Driver Development Track. As formula cars aren’t designed to house Clydesdale’s we figured that it would be good to send Miss Shelby rather than yours truly. Unfortunately, the cut off age for the event was 18 years of age, so that nixed that idea. I had a look through the BRA website and found that the fitment guide says that drivers over 6’4″ and 275 lb might actually fit in the school cars. My heart skipped a beat and I headed up to the track for a test fitting. Sure enough, while it was a tight squeeze, I was able to shoehorn myself into the hot looking red and white rocket.

Yahoo…I’m gonna drive an open wheeler!

Rather than a full on racing school type of day, this was a corporate event day that the Academy has developed for corporations to use for team building. For some of the guests in our group, it was their first opportunity to drive a high performance vehicle while for others it was essentially a lapping day.

Being out front… Consistency is the key to success

As a racing instructor over the years I have mentored and instructed many student drivers. Some started out in their daily drivers, some in well prepped race cars and even a few let rental cars learn along with them. They range from young to not-so-young, there are guys and gals but all of them have the desire to learn to go faster in a controlled fashion. There are those occasional times when some pro-drivers will come to race in what we deem “our” tracks not unlike a dog who has his favorite fire-hydrant. Quality drivers can figure out most tracks on their own but getting some local knowledge doesn’t hurt anything either and pros will take any advantage they can. I liken it to when I go to some far away place on a fishing trip and even though I have fished all my life I know it will save me lots of wasted time when I hire a local guide to show me what works best and what doesn’t.
