Challenger SRT8: Did I mention that it was Orange?

November 30, 2008 by Gary Grant 4 Comments

Leading up to the 2008 IMPA Test Days at Pocono Raceway, we had compiled a short list of must drives. Top spot on that list was held by none other than the Dodge Challenger SRT8. Few cars have created so much buzz in recent years and few cars have stirred the memories of so many. Getting behind the wheel and looking around, the car truly does feel like a bit of a time warp. The low roof and the cut of the C-pillar truly feel like the Challenger of old. I couldn’t wait to take it out on the track.

Oh yeah, having just spun the Viper, I managed to behave myself and keep the pumpkin on the pavement!

Chrysler design boss taking on Targa Newfoundland in bright green 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8

September 5, 2008 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

When stories began swirling around about the Dodge Challenger Drag Pak model aimed at hard core drag racers, The Garage wondered how long it would be until we see a road racing version to take on the variety of competition Mustangs Ford has on offer. Today Chrysler announced that design guru Ralph Gilles will tackle the 2008 Targa Newfoundland rally in a Snake Skin Green 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8.

With a Drag Pak car being used as a base, could this be the precursor to a competition model that turns as well as it goes?

Regular readers are familiar with tarmac rallies through the writings of Gary Faules who has taken us to La Carrera Panamericana and back. Targa Newfoundland is our Canadian version, which pits competitors from around the world against each other and some of Newfoundland’s most challenging roads. There are classes for classics and modern equipment, along with overall wins and even a navigational class for those who don’t wish to compete in full attack mode.

This will be Gilles’ 3rd visit to The Rock, where he has DNF’d due to leaving the tarmac and a class win last year in the Dodge Caliber SRT4.

The folks at Chrysler Canada are a pretty excited bunch this week, after watching the first 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 make it’s way out of the Brampton, Ontario plant on Thursday. The Canadian plant also manufactures the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can get our hands on one here in The Garage.
