Centennial College Show & Shine a good time despite gloomy weather

June 9, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

For the second year in a row, the Centennial College School of Transportation show and shine has been plagued by dark skies and the imminent threat of rain. Even though rain scares away a lot of cruisers, there was still a wide variety of cars on hand for spectators to check out. There was a live band and a number of activities to keep people entertained. The kids had a blast trying to out do each other on the bicycled powered hydraulic crane, while more than a few adults were lined up to test some new welding equipment.

After the break we’ve got a huge gallery of photos from this year’s show.

Power Hot Rod Reunion 2009

August 26, 2009 by Gary Grant 2 Comments

Ever wonder where all the cool old cars have disappeared to? If the videos we’ve seen over the past couple of days are any indication, they’ve all been shipped to Scandinavia. Yesterday we had some crazy Finnish drifting and today we’ve got the 2009 Hot Rod Reunion at Malmby Fairground. This cruise and drag day looks like a condensed version of Woodward Avenue. Except that is for one crazy VW that just may be the lowest low rider ever.

Canadian Tire Whitby Cruise

August 15, 2009 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago, while hanging out on the couch watching X-Games, I got a call from a friend who asked if I knew anything about the cruise going on at the Canadian Tire at the end of the street. Nope. Hadn’t heard a thing. I was enjoying the Ford vs Subaru battle and had no intention of leaving. Then, it occurred to me that there was going to be a least an hour of skate boarding, so I hopped in the 370Z and went for a visit. I’m glad I did.

This charity cruise was much bigger than expected and included everything from a pair of real Shelby’s to some well prepared low riders. There was a great cross section of new and old, stock to wild. Of course there were a few girls along for the show too!

Cruising in miniature

Sometimes cruise night isn’t all about the big toys. Sometimes, the big boys toys are a tiny bit tiny but their owners still want to show them off. At cruise night earlier this week, one fellow brought out his collection of diecasts for all to see. Pretty cool stuff.

Corvette Forum breakfast meet

April 25, 2009 by Gary Grant 2 Comments

Young Riley & I were out shooting pictures of the 2010 Lincoln MKZ at Whitby harbour this morning and on our way home we noticed a lot full of Corvettes. Of course we had to drop by for a quick visit. It turns out that it was a breakfast meet-up of the Corvette Forum. Even more surprising was that our old friend Mike D`Angelo was there with his red beast. Of course it wasn`t all Vettes, as there was a 2010 Camaro cruising in and out and the red GT500 stuck out like a sore thumb in the middle of all that fibreglass.

Gallery: Woodward Dream Cruise Part 1

August 22, 2007 by Gary Grant 2 Comments

The first images from the 2007 Woodward Dream Cruise have begun to trickle into The Garage. We’re a few days behind some of the other blogs, but there are a ton of images in this first submission alone. There are over 500 photos to sort though, so I’ll be a busy boy tonight. For now, let’s start things off with the beginning of the trip.

James and Rob Tong took their blue Mustang Cobra, along with other members of a couple of local Mustang clubs down for their annual trip to Woodward. The first stops were at Saleen and Roush, where they saw some pretty cool stuff.

More images from the Cruise later today.

Car show at Ajax Downs

August 20, 2007 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

Strictly by chance we came across a car show at Ajax Downs yesterday, while on our way to Costco. The intent was for this to be a big affair, with a huge, visible lot and a full stage complete with Torte Elvis, but we hadn’t seen or heard boo about it.

Likewise, there was apparently a pretty big 2 day Bug show here in Durham but I didn’t see anything about it until Sunday afternoon.

It never ceases to amaze me how poor a job the local car show promoters do. Let’s face it, I’m pretty much hooked up in the automotive world, yet somehow I haven’t heard about these decent size local shows. Come on guys, there is lots of free and easy promotion to be had if you really want to promote your show.

Anyway, there were a handful of really cool rides on hand at Ajax Downs, and a ton of OK drivers. No wicked rats, no race cars and no muscle cars that mattered, so it took us about 10 minutes to walk the show. The cars that were interesting were sitting unattended, so there were no stories to be had either.

Grabbed a few cool shots though.

Oh yeah…the quote of the day comes from some 50 ish guy…

Hey, there goes that Corvair. You know the engine’s in the back!

He just figured that out…40 years later.

Coop visits So Cal Speed Shop open house

I was pretty impressed with the quantity and quality of cars in attendance at a local cruise a couple of weeks ago, but that show pales when compared to an open house at the birth place of hot rodding. Coop took his bum leg and his Leica to the annual open house at the So Cal Speed Shop and took about a zillion photos. Visit Positive Ape Index and then follow through to Coop’s Flickr page.

Road Legends weekly cruise in Ajax

June 12, 2007 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

ajax-2.jpg

The Road Legends Cruisers in Durham, Ontario have been organizing cruise nights for years. On Saturday evening I decided to take the boys over the the Ajax Canadian Tire to check out a few cool cars. While they have the occasional big one every year, most of these weekly cruises are weekly events with 30-40 cars. Imagine my surprise then when we arrived to find a huge car show in progress. I would guess that there were over 200 cars, ranging from Rods to classics, Muscle to mouse. Not to mention a few rats, elephants and the like!

If you are in the Toronto area and have a sweet old ride, or just want to get out and gawk the Road Legends Cruise nights are a great way to spend an evening. Be sure to visit their site to get the schedule.
