Look up: Ford GT Pace Car looking for a home

November 4, 2008 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

So why are you looking up? Well, the Ford GT Pace Car that has been the subject of our header image for the past couple of years is going to auction today. This image was taken by Jaimie Macpherson at the 2007 Steeleback Grand Prix in Toronto. With the absence of Champ Car and the Canadian GP, it must be time to put the old horse out to stud.

For those of you who are inclined to buy a bit of Canadian auto racing history, hurry and visit Adessa, as we’re pretty sure this one will sell quickly. I’m a bit surprised Ford isn’t keeping it to display in the lobby next to the one in the Gulf Oil colours.

Via Jalopnik, because we somehow missed this in our own town!

What happens when you merge two organizations? Usually you end up with a ton of surplus desks and stationary. When those two organizations happen to be pro racing series through, you get an unbelievable amount of cool stuff. In the aftermath of the IRL/CCWS reunification, there is an absolute ton of said stuff and there are creditors looking to recoup some cash. Sounds like time for an auction!

That’s right, the entire pile of Champ Car booty is going on the block on June 3rd at the old Champ Car headquarters in Indianapolis. Timing equipment, race transporters, race cars, shop equipment, memorabilia and a bunch of those cool pace cars are all up for sale.

As a teaser, we’ve got the list of pace cars after the break. For all the other stuff and photos, or to bid online visit the Gallivan Auctioneers site.

Will PT be sitting on the pot in 2008?

Just as the Toronto Grand Prix became a casualty of the final battle before the IRL/CCWS reunion, the home town boy may sit out the 08 season as well. TSN has reported that long time Champ Car team owner Gerald Forsythe has decided to call it a day for the format. Forsythe Racing Inc will apparently continue with their involvement with the Formula Atlantic series, ensuring that fellow Canuck James Hinchcliffe will keep his ride.

Whether Forsythe was fed up with the flip flopping, or not happy with the final terms of the reunification is not clear. Nor is it clear as to how the remaining 4 years of driver Paul Tracy’s 5 year contract will be dealt with.

Perhaps PT would like to come up to Mosport and run in the Arrive & Drive series!

It is finally official, the IRL & CCWS are one. The way it should have always been. Sour grapes of the past aside though, as Karl Kalkhoven said: “Now is not the time to look back”

Greg MacPherson from Inside Track live blogged the press conference yesterday and has some great insight.

IRL & Champ Car reunite: Great for racing, terrible for Toronto

Ever since North America’s open wheel racing series was torn apart by Tony George and his American only plan, I, like many fans have dreamed of the day the two series would quit struggling and get back together. At its peak, CART offered some of the best racing in the world. What followed would be years of lackluster racing, sponsorship woes and odd business practices. Little did I dream that when the marriage between the two series, our Toronto race would be a victim of the battle.
