Gymkhana morphs into Footkhana

April 22, 2014 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

Just when you think that action sports figure turned extreme driving icon Ken Block couldn’t possible do anything new with his fire breathing Ford Fiesta, he drops yet another Monster on you. See how I did that? This time, Gymkhana is Castrol Footkhana. Foot, as in footie or footy, or football. Whatever it is you people who like soccer call it. This time, Block gets into a bit of a match with Brazilian FIFA World Cup star Neymar Jr. & his gang of soccer freestylers.

Bringing gearheads and soccer fans together!

Kennington Finishes Second In Vernon

July 28, 2011 by Todd Lewis Leave a Comment

July 24, 2011. DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team began the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series swing through western Canada with another strong outing. Now at the half way point of the season, Kennington and the team have hit their stride and grabbed a second place finish at round number six at Motoplex Speedway near Vernon, BC.

DJ Kennington takes the win at Mosport

June 28, 2011 by Todd Lewis Leave a Comment

June 26, 2011. Castrol Edge Dodge driver DJ Kennington’s season is officially back on track following round four of the2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at Mosport International Raceway. Following a third place finish at the last event Kennington scored his first win of the season on the famed road course near Bowmanville, Ontario and jumped to third in the overall point standings.

The weekend began under misty skies on Saturday where a damp track limited the number of on track laps and cancelled the qualifying session. By rule the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge would line up fourth on the starting grid. “We didn’t get a lot of laps because of the weather but the car felt good so we used our best guess on the set up for a dry and warm race day on Sunday” said Kennington.

When the 200km event began Sunday afternoon Kennington mixed it up with the front runners but as always gave each of his challengers plenty of racing room. “I would have liked to have led a lap earlier but I also wanted to pace myself and make sure our car was good for the end of the race” explained the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge driver.

Canadian Touring Cars get new partner, logos and website for 2011 season

January 27, 2011 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

The longest racing series title in Canada just became a bit longer. Thankfully they’ve shortened the acronym! Now, the CCTCC is the CTCC.

Over the past few seasons, the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship has provided race fans and racers alike with some of the best racing in North America. For 2011, series President John Bondar has brought on Continental Tire as a new title sponsor for the series.

Obviously, this comes with a switch to Continental Tires. There is more to it though, as the switch also puts the cars on slicks. As the first race weekend will be the first time some drivers have been on slicks, that first event should be even more exciting for the fans as drivers adjust to the higher levels of grip that come with treadless tires. Once the field becomes used to the tires, we can expect the action to be even faster than it was last year!

The new package was revealed at the Canadian Motorsports Expo last weekend, along with the new series name: The Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Continental Tires. We’ve got photos of the launch after the break.

2010 Grand Prix of Mosport: an overview

August 31, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

The 2010 Grand Prix of Mosport was a weekend packed full of action and stories both on and off the track. The headliner for the weekend was the always exciting American Le Mans Series, with support from IMSA Lites, Star Mazda, Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup and the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship.
IMSA racing has played a big part in the history of Mosport, so it was fitting that the grand Prix was a key event in Mosport’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

The Grand Marshal of the weekend was the legendary Bobby Unser, who won his first IndyCar race at Mosport in 1967. I was fortunate to spend some time with him on Friday afternoon and found him to be an absolutely wonderful guy as we chatted about how the track has changed over the years. Joining Unser over the weekend were Canadian racing champions Bill Brack, Eppie Wietzes, Ludwig Heimrath Sr., Craig Hill, Horst Kroll and Ross de St. Croix who all signed autographs and mingled with the fans.

Canadian Touring cars practice at Mosport

June 11, 2010 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

Despite being a healthy semi-pro series, most participants in the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship still have regular day jobs. As a result, the cars in today’s practice sessions were a bit sparse. Those teams that were able to make it out today should have a leg up on the competition, unless the rain comes tomorrow as the forecast says it will.

I managed to catch a bit of the on track action. The sun has taken more of a toll on me than normal, so I’m not editing photos tonight. Here are a few unedited shots that I’m pretty happy with.

This is Canadian Touring Car…

June 7, 2010 by Gary Grant 2 Comments

One of the highlights of the May 24 weekend at Mosport this year was the super competitive Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires, otherwise known as CCTCC. This showroom stock series provides incredible action for fans and competitors alike. In fact, these races are every bit as exciting as the SCCA World Challenge.

The organizers have put together the first in a series of videos following the 2010 racing season, and we’ve got it for you after the break.

While many think all the excitement of a car race happens out on the track, they would be a bit off the mark. The action happens on the track, but there are few places that reach the excitement level of the mock grid. You can almost feel the excitement in the air as drivers prepare to head out into battle. Some are winding themselves up, while others are so intent on calming down that they actually go to sleep in the car.

On the Victoria Day weekend, I spent some time on the mock grid with the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship teams capturing images of the driver’s as they prepare to roll onto the track. My apologies to those that I’ve missed, I’ll get you on another weekend.

This morning started bright and early with the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship on the famed Toronto street circuit. I missed most of the session while attending the photographers meeting, but was able to make it out to catch a bit of pit lane action. As the weekend goes by, there will be many more pics to share. This is our first teaser of the day.

Castrol to support Judd Buchannan at Targa Newfoundland

August 1, 2007 by Gary Grant 4 Comments

targa060399.jpg

There are few names in the history of Canadian motorsports that go back as far as Castrol, the oil company that has been involved with Canadian racing since the beginning. When the first Targa Newfoundland was run in 2003, Castrol was one of the main sponsors of the event. That year, Judd Buchannan finished 3rd overall in his super fast, super unique 1967 Acadian Canso. The following years have seen Targa finishes ranging from 4th to 2nd overall, but the top spot has escaped Buchannan.

For 2007, Buchannan has been joined by Castrol and is planning an all out assault on The Rock’s twisty tarmac roads. It sounds like this is going to be a win at almost all cost attempt.
