A Day in the Life Of A Tall Pines Rally Volunteer

September 3, 2016 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

rally volunteers

One of the most common questions I am asked by new motorsport enthusiasts is “How do I start racing or rallying?” There are so many different types of motorsport that my first answer is to get out and spectate. Visit as many events as you can to figure out which form of the sport is the best one for you. Next step is to get out and volunteer. It may not sound glamourous, but every form of motorsport is so dependent on volunteers that the show would not go on without them.

You don’t even need any special skills, just a willingness to work and follow some basic directions. Volunteering allows you to see behind the scenes and meet the people who are in the know. Once you are ready to explore a bit of competition yourself, these people you meet along the way will be your biggest supporters and will usually help you out too.

So what does a volunteer do? It can be anything from organizing events to shuttling lunch around and pretty much anything in between. Canadian rally volunteer Justin Cohen put together a great video at the 2015 running of the Rally of the Tall Pines, to show how his day went.

It has been a week since the 2011 edition of the Rally of the Tall Pines in Bancroft, Ontario and the onboard videos are beginning to pop up. The warm weather brought unusually high speeds, which led to a high attrition rate. Pines is usually known for having lots of “offs” due to snowy roads, but this year there was just one roll. Even still, just 25 of 60 teams finished the rally!

Our first video comes from Chris Martin and Brian Johnson, who put on a great show before becoming one of the casualties of Tall Pines.

The Rally of the Tall Pines. An icon on the North American rally scene. The final major motorsports event of the year.

As always, The Garage Blog will be there to bring you the sights and maybe even some sounds of the 2011 Rally of the Tall Pines in Bancroft, Ontario. You can be there too, for a rare opportunity to get up close and personal World class rally cars and their drivers. Best of all, it is free!

Of course, the best way to see the event would be to spend a few bucks on the Tall Pines VIP pass which includes transportation to and from the stages, food and special perks along the way. Perks like heat! They even throw in a bunch of official Tall Pines swag. For just $145 it is one of the best deals in all of motorsport and sells out every year. To learn more, visit the VIP program page.

The 2011 running of Tall Pines promises to be the biggest ever, with 60 teams entered ranging from classics to open class monsters. Along with the usual Subaru and Mitsubishi suspects, we’ll also see new Ford Fiesta rally machines. Add in a vintage Volvo, a Corolla and even a Datsun and there should be some great drifting action all day long. Mother nature is hard at work freezing the ditches solid and laying down a bit of snow to make things more challenging for the drivers, more exciting for the fans!

If you are really feeling lucky, you should enter Crazy Leo’s contest over on his Facebook fan page. The Crazy Leo VIP Rally Experience is like the VIP program on steroids. The winner gets a ride with Crazy Leo in The Beast, an open class Subaru WRX, during Friday’s shakedown stages. The prize also includes admission to Leo’s Tall Pines after party, complete with free beer!

All you need to do is submit your favorite rally photo to chris@crazyleo.net and you will be entered in the contest. Better hurry though, the contest closes on Wednesday at 10 pm.

Regardless of how you choose to watch the event, you HAVE to go to Bancroft this Saturday to check out the action. Come early and dress warm!

Tall Pines stage A7: Up close at Iron Bridge

Pat Richard storms the bridge!

Yes, I AM that close!

After A5, competitors head over to the Mayo Lake stage before returning to the Iron Bridge spectator stage for the final time. We switched up our shooting locations a bit and I positioned myself right up next to the bridge. Pat Richard was still pedaling the Subaru as fast as he could, which brought him past the lens closer and faster than anyone else. Even still, he was 3 seconds slower than the leader. Antoine L’Estage was running fast and smooth and Richard would have to push harder to catch him as the sun began to set and the temperatures dropped.

With a history dating back to 1971, the Rally of the Tall Pines is one of the most historic events on the North American rally scene. The list of past winners includes names like John Buffum, Rod Millen, Taisto Heinonen and Frank Sprongl. 2008 Canadian Rally Championship kicks off at Perce Neige

February 9, 2008 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment

If there is one Canadian rally that I’ve regretted not running, it’s Perce Neige. Held in the dead of winter in snowy Quebec, PN is truly a test of man and machine. Way back in the early Nineties, my team owner, John Heintzman campaigned the little Suzuki and learned the hard way that stock alternators are not designed to power a full light pod, high beams, front and rear defrosters all at once.

The 2008 season is under way today and the boys at Flat Over Crest are there in full force. Andrew Harvey is shooting stills, while Warwick Patterson gets more of that incredible video that he’s so well known for. Another member of the FOC team is Erik Ockwell, who is manning a microphone for the newly launched FOC Rally Radio, where fans can get daily updates, live from the snowy forests of Northern Quebec.
