Last minute Christmas shopping ideas: The art of Paul Chenard

With things being so crazy around The Garage these days, I’ve been rather slow in getting to my Christmas shopping guide here. Just like my real Christmas shopping and I suspect yours too. If your loved ones are stumped in their quest to get you the perfect gift, why not send them a link to The Garage to score you some stunning art for the den?

Canadian artist Paul Chenard has been part of the extended family here in The Garage now for quite some time. He creates images of some of the most important moments in motorsport history, along with cars that have defined generations of automotive design. Paul’s unique use of combining simple line drawings and vibrant colours is not your typical automotive art.

V like Vintage: An amazing collection of photos taken before 1970

Regular readers know that I’m a sucker for great photography, even more so when it captures great moments in automotive history. While catching up on friend of The Garage, Philip Powell over at Classical Drives I was beyond excited to find his review of V like Vintage. This wonderful site is a social network for photography buffs much like Flickr but with a difference. The site is open to photos taken before 1970 and the focus seems to be on things that move us like planes, boats, cars and of course you can’t forget about the vintage Pin Up girls.

Rather than just showing the old pro images that we’ve all seen before, the work of amateurs is strongly encouraged, meaning that we get to see photos through the eyes of regular people. At this point, there is a strong presence of German history, from family portraits to the Nurburgring. There are shots taken from a German Mineboat and incredible sidecar racing images. Watch the new photos page and you’ll see the images from around the world are rapidly appearing.

V like Vintage might be destined to become one of the most historically significant social networks on the web.

The photo above of Graham Hill was taken at Zandvoort in 1970 and was taken by Werner Horn.

The history of Vanwall

September 16, 2008 by Gary Grant 1 Comment

Who doesn’t love stories and images of old Grand Prix cars? I know I certainly do, especially when there are such oddities as a biscuit jar with Coopers and Vanwalls on them!

Our man on the east coast, Paul Chenard, has some tales of the British marque. Oh yes, you can also pick up some of Paul’s work for the den!

Video: The Art of Racing

June 5, 2008 by Gary Grant 3 Comments

Canadian motorsports artist Paul Chenard has become somewhat of a fixture around The Garage over the past year or so. Paul’s artistic talents are only matched by his enthusiasm for the history of racing. His latest endeavor has been to combine some of his works into a short video, with a soundtrack that I suspect was recorded at last year’s VARAC Festival at Mosport.

Paul is always busy creating new images that continue to blow all of us behind the scenes in The Garage, so we’re going to begin showcasing a new one of Paul’s sketches every week. For now, check out the short video and then visit the link for Automobiliart at the top right of the page to get your own images for the den.

Artist Paul Chenard: Impressions of Speed

Between working in the car industry and working on The Garage, I’ve been lucky enough to meet some pretty cool people. One of the most recent is artist Paul Chenard. He lives in the east end of Canada and so doesn’t have instant access to the automotive memorabilia centers here in the center of the universe. Never one to turn down a visit to an automotive toy store or two, I offered to help spread the word around Toronto. Paul sent me a bit of a care package to help me along the way and it arrived just in time for Easter in The Garage.

Photos (especially my feeble ones) don’t convey how great these images look. Paul has done a wonderful job and has some mad creative talents that may just move his name into the forefront of automotive art. Paul’s latest project has been a series of images celebrating Phil Hill’s achievements with Ferrari. The limited number of these is currently in the hands of the American Champion waiting to be signed. Once signed, they will be available through Race Legends.
