Now that Audi has introduced its redesigned A4 to North America, they are ready to bring on the noise (maybe some funk too) in the form of the new S4. Here are the details: power will come from a supercharged 3.0 liter, direct-injected V-6 pumping out 333hp good for a 0-100kph run of 5.1 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Drivers can choose between a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed S-Tronic auto. Despite these strong numbers, Audi promises over 24mpg highway fuel economy-not bad for a high-performance, all-wheel drive four door sedan.
Audi fans will be able to tell the S4 apart from lesser A4’s by its aluminum-look sideview mirrors, S4 specific 18″ rims, quad exhaust pipes, rocker panels, xenon headlights, and one of the most elegant, subtle rear deck spoilers you’ve ever seen. Inside, expect seats with greater support and adjustability, grey instruments with white needles for a distinctive look.
Autoblog set pricing for the 2009 S4 at just over $48,000. America will be denied the S4 Avant, sadly. Just as Mercedes and BMW “decided”, there simply is not sufficient demand here to justify exporting a high-performance station wagon. If you agree with that, can someone explain why Audi is more than happy to sell you an A3? Whatever the case, the new S4 sounds like a great drive-excellent performance and decent fuel economy. Living in New England as I do, Quattro counts for a lot too. Coupled with the car’s good looks and class-leading interior, I think we have a winner here.
