Some guys have all the fun: Von Minden drives vintage sprint cars in New Zealand

Our guys on the West coast never cease to amaze me with the incredible cool car stuff they manage to send our way. Aaron Von Minden, from Savage Speed Garage has taken things to a new level this time. The Von Fonda is on vacation in New Zealand at the moment and has somehow found a stash of vintage sprint cars and managed to get some seat time. I’m disappointed he didn’t take the Stars & Stripes lid with him for the photo op!

Aaron has promised tons more photos when he gets back to Cali.

More sideways goodness after the break.

Does that mean the swirl of the track goes in the opposite direction?

My pants… they is wet!

Gary, not sure if the track swirls the opposite direction, but the beer flowing from the keg does.

That does look like fun. It appears to be a private track. The vintage cars look like midgets, not sprint cars. I am trying to compare the size of the driver to the size of the car bodies and wheels. They appear to be driving counter-clockwise which is standard for circle tracks. I noticed the low, roll hoop on the older car whereas the others have cages. Roll bars became mandatory in the U.S. in 1959. Cages became mandatory in 1971.

There is a long history of American open-wheel drivers racing in Australia during our winter months. They export a race car to Australia, and then sell it before returning to the U.S. Only a few Australian drivers have raced with the World Of Outlaws in the U.S.

Yes its a private track of Mark Stokes. Both the cars run with the Aukland vintage Speedway Club at their own track by Meremere Drag strip. Check out their web site, some cool old school dirt cars. :-)

hey Guys,It’s NEW ZEALAND ,a different country to Australia. Don’t forget that one of the most popular drivers of the 40′50’60’s was a New Zealander,Frank Brewer and that a couple of world champions got there start in New Zealand.Bruce McLaren etc etc .
Sir Jack Brabham is Australian but got his start racing Dirt track Midgets which he built himself.
