Shelby GT500KR: Muscling the Red Dragon

by Gary Grant on October 25, 2008 · 6 comments

If the Shelby GT500 KR is a special car, then the one pictured above may be the most special of the bunch. This is prototype number 1 and Ford kindly brought it to Pocono Raceway for IMPA members to sample. Of course the first prototype of any model is always beyond applicable value, so Ford wasn’t just letting a bunch of yahoos flog it on the track. Instead, they brought along one of their development engineers who has logged literally thousands of track miles in the car to give rides.

I have to say that I am unbelievably disappointed in my journalistic skills here, as I have lost the man’s business card and can’t remember his name. That is a real shame, as the guy knows this car inside and out and gives the view all the details on what makes this KR stand out. We even learn about the origins of the code name Red Dragon.

After the break, may be our best video yet!

That was a fun run around the track! I was fortunate to have been the second passenger of the day. My first time in a 5-point and first time at over 140 mph!

What a great Mustang! Makes me drool just looking at it! I find it hard to believe that Ford continues to make such remarkable cars, year after year.
Love the story. Sorry you lost his name, but maybe he will see your site and call you!!
