We’ve had some pretty cool Shelby stuff come through The Garage over the past couple of days, so this fits right in with the theme lately.
Ontario based RM Auctions has announced a rather special Shelby car will cross the auction block at the Automobiles of Arizona at the Biltmore Resort in Phoenix on January 22. CSX 2196 was the prototype for the 427 Cobra, developed by Ken Miles and utilizes a unique dual clamshell body which allowed easy access to components during development and competition. That’s right, competition. While most prototypes go in museums or get crushed, Shelby didn’t have that kind of money. Every car built was put into use at some point. This car was raced at Riverside, Sebring and Nassau.
While CSX 2196 has worn several different paint schemes over the years, it has been returned to the original blue with white stripes and black interior. It has been a regular competitor in vintage racing events from the Monterey Historics to the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
As for how much it will sell for, the old saying applies: If you have to ask….
