A sad reality of the Dakar is the fact that some competitors will not come home. South African bike rider and blogger Elmer Symons was the first rider to perish. Our thoughts go out to his family. Rest assured that he must have been having the time of his life, in the event of a lifetime. The Dakar will go on, as it always does, with competitors acknowledging the fallen in their own way once their event is over.
