Many internet outlets are reporting today on the demise of the Ford Ranger. Not totally confirmed, but if true, a shame for those who wanted the alternative of a reliable compact pick-up.
As the story is currently being told, Ford has on its list of 2009 closings the Twin Cities Plant in Minnesota that makes the Ranger as well as the Cleveland plant that cast the engine blocks. It appears that whether or not the guillotine drops will be formally announced by Ford head honcho Alan Mulally at the Detroit Auto Show.
I have driven Ford Rangers many times and considered them to be good performers with bed space adequate to accommodate the hauling needs of those who do not need the space of an F-150. The truck seemed to have a closet, cult following of owners who kept to themselves but had a tremendous infinity for the “little guy.”
In my mind one of the unfortunate aspects of the Ranger was Fords inability to develop an engine plan to increase gas mileage and its lack of added amenities that made a potential Ranger buyer see a bluer horizon in the purchase of an F-150. The truck could have also used a recent refresh to let it regenerate the interest of buyers. With GM, Toyota and Dodge supersizing their trucks it seems that a nice niche remains on the compact end.
If Ford does indeed bow out, look for a manufacturer like Hyundai to pick up the slack and get the job done.
