Project D

I was on the initial Sebring press revel in San Diego back in 2006 and enjoyed the couple of days I was at the helm of the car. I gave the car a decent review inside and out but was pummeled by fellow journalists for my lack of taste in not blasting what was considered a dreadful cheap looking interior.

Well it appears that the irate angry mobs that descended upon the gates of Chrysler in Auburn Hills, with torches in hand to protest bad taste are getting their way.

Sales of both the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger, which share a platform, have been hugely disappointing. Fearing that the interior is a major part of the anemic sales, Chrysler is taking the bull, or should I say Ram by the horns by assembling a team to be part of the secretively dubbed “Project D.”

The team will be charged with redesigning the interiors of the hapless Sebring, Avenger twosome.

Now here is the bizarre part of the tale. The elite Project D team will include some senior managers and directors who headed for the hills and took recent Chrysler buyouts. They are being hired as contract employees.

If they couldn’t get it right the first time, who’s to say that they will have design epiphanies this time around?

Let’s hope Project D doesn’t quickly become Project F.

You’ve gotta wonder why they don’t chase down interior designers from a company like oh, say Audi, who are known for their quality interiors. I’m sure they could send some contracts that way.
