SEMA 2007: Pretty Ugly

The Tire and Wheel section of SEMA is a kaleidoscope of chrome and rubber. The problem is too much chrome and rubber can make you literally insane.

To protect show goers from firing off a few rounds from a sawed off, the wheel and tire gang provides buyers with beautiful girls, “sales associates” so to speak, and hot cars to break the monotony.

It seems every guy with a digital camera, cell phone, Polaroid or cheap throw-a-way is snapping the “scenery.” While taking photo’s of the beautiful people a number of journalists who roamed the rubber arcade set sights on what they felt was the ugliest car at SEMA. I took a look for myself and concurred.

Mustangs come in all shapes and sizes at the show.

Jack Roush showed off a gem.

p-511.jpg

Jack Roush introduced his latest creation the Mustang P-51. Roush and crew did a beautiful job combining his love of flying with his passion for Mustangs. When Roush was a kid he built a model of the P-51. As he got older and more affluent his model P-51 turned into the actual purchase of a restored real deal. The car is Roush’s highest horsepower Pony ever coming in at 510 with 510lb-ft. of torque.Roush explained at the unveiling that it was determined that the only way to give the P-51A name its just due was to completely break into the 4.6L, 3V and rebuild several of the functional internal components, which include a forged steel eight-bolt crankshaft, forged aluminum pistons with increased dish to lower the compression from 9:8 to 8:6, and forged steel H-Beam connecting rods. These upgraded parts were necessary for the stock Ford engine to be able to withstand the additional power generated from the newest iteration of the legendary ROUSHcharger supercharger system.

There were anxious moments before the canvas was pulled back.

One had to spend a massive amount of time listening to Roush pontificate. He rivals old communist leaders in how long he can hold court in front of a microphone. He says some true nuggets, but can also glaze the eyes. I guess he even bores himself at times.

Ford announced its new Ford Racing Mustang Challenge.

The FR500S is a ready to race $75,000 325hp Mustang. It’s the first race machine built by Ford on an assembly line. The car is built sans seats, carpet, noise insulation and interior amenities that are normally found on a street car.The V8 powered “spec” racer is shipped to Miller Motorsports Park for its final tweaking. Running on BF Goodrich rubber, 77 have been built with more on the way. A cool relatively inexpensive way to race.

But, I’ve digressed. I was talking about the ugliest car at SEMA. Many have shown pictures, many have verbally torn the sheet metal to shreds. Here it is…

Now many journalists and bloggers have dissed this “artistic” interpretation of the designer, but have not delved into his pain.Rich Evans is from California he owns Rich Evans Designs which he operates out of a, would you believe, medieval themed 13,000 square foot Huntington Beach Bodyworks, a custom auto shop located just south of LA.Known as “The Hardcore” Knight” he developed a Stang that has flat black body work that is the backdrop for a wicked assortment of spikes and machined hardware. The car has spiked wheels and machine gun exhaust outlets. From head to toe this all American muscle car looks like it is wearing some bad Halloween costume. The car has Fake scoops, an oversized front spoiler and wings and bad chrome treatment. Scary.

But just when you think it’s time to turn Evans into the House Committee for Un-American activities for his disrespect of an American icon, there is one redeeming quality.

He’s obviously a Patriot.

I think the Mustang looks amazing. True, it’s different than what everyone else is doing, but then again Rich Evans always surprises. Like the Eiffel Tower, which was panned before it was admired, this pony from the dark side may ultimately win the race.

Hi Lyle,

I think it was the perceived shock of “defacing an icon” that brought the ire of most photographers and journalists. I guess to many Mustangs and Vets are sort of held in reverence. It was sort of like wearing a Black Sabbath shirt to Church.

Defacing an icon is nothing new. Think way back to Corvette Summer!

Rich Evans mustang, is his own design. Unlike most of his other works in which he may dictate direction, but is not the artistic master people are lead to beleave. I know this for sure because I (Terry Stephens) aka KIWI TERRY do 99% of all air brush work at his shop and am tired of the credit going to Rich Evans. So I was over joyed to see him design something by himself and reap the accolades. Even I have been subject to paint projects I thought tasteless and or juvenile in conjunction with the dark loads demandes.
