On the road: Vintage Coke

No story really, just a cool vintage Coke display in rural Ontario.

I love old vintage Coke products and there is a bunch of it especially in the Mid West and parts of Missouri near where their old plants were. I had an old black and white photo taken in front of their Joplin Missouri bottling plant an in that photo was a Model T truck and a horse drawn wagon both owned and used by Coke as delivery vehicles. On the front of the building beneath the Coca Cola logo it said “Cocaine helps to relax you.”

I have some great memories of old Coke machines that sat out front of service stations while we were on long drives. Back in those days the bottles sat in ice cold water and after you paid your nickel it let you slid your bottle out between two rails. After you got it out then you used the bottle opener on the front of the machine which had a place for the bottle caps to fall into. It was common for kids to ask permission to empty the bottle caps for their collections. There was nothing better than an ice cold coke and I have no idea how many times I drank them too fast until the fizzed up my nose.

I have to laugh each time I remember my father saying, “Ten cents for a bottle of Coke! You must be kidding. At this rate some day they will be charging 25 cents for that stuff.”
