On the road to Paso Robles

dsc04939.JPG

As promised, we’ve got a few more shots of the Savage Speed 49 Merc on it’s maiden voyage to the Paso Robles Cruise Nationals.

Over the next few days I’m sure we’ll have shots of the cruise.

I love the great setting in which these photos were taken. We go to Paso Robles several times a year. The California State Fair is held there and there are several great parks near lakes where we used to take our camper, boat and the kids for a weekend. The small town of Paso Robles is one that will always make you feel welcome. Several times I have been lucky to have been the guest of William Randolph Hearst, Jr at their family ranch and vineyards to hunt wild Russian boar that are descendents of the original wild boar that his father imported since they try to destroy the vineyards. I am going to have to learn more about the next car show there so I can make arrangements to go. Paso Robles is one place you better not forget to make hotel reservations or you will end up sleeping in the back of your pickup for the night. Trust me… I know. What a night that was!

I just noticed something while reviewing these photos again. In the photo that shows the carb and intake, take a good look at the battery. You will notice a single wire that is attached to the middle of the battery. Many of these old cars that originally were upgraded from 6 volt systems to 12 volt to ease starting/cranking issues still had some of the original 6 volt accessories in the car such as dash bulbs and wiring. For that reason they would simply tap into a cell in the middle of the battery which would in fact give them 6 volts. We used to see it all the time back in the days when we worked on 6 volt conversions. Pretty cool trick.
