On the Block: Olds Vista Cruiser

It is not common practice here at The Garage for us to talk about cars for sale, but we do make an exception now and then. Our subject here is a 1969 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser. This was America’s high point for luxurious family wagons, back in the day when the minivan was non-existent, and the thought of using an SUV for normal family transportation was unheard of. If you had a family, and money, the Vista Cruiser, with its faux wood paneling and skylights was one phat whip.

This Olds is original, but rough around the edges. Frame is straight, and the car is 100% complete-everything is there. With 165k miles on the 350 Rocket, it runs well. The car has new brakes, brake lines, engine parts, tires and shocks. There is a crack in the windshield, the skylight leaks, there are dents on the body and chrome, the paint is flaking and the car needs a new exhaust. But with an asking price of $1,500USD, you can simply enjoy it and drive it into the ground, or give her a restoration.

Big? Heck yeah, the Vista Cruiser is a full 16″ longer than a 2010 Chevy Tahoe, but this is one cheap ticket into classic car ownership that I had to share with you. See the full ad at Craigslist.

My dad was a GM dealer back then. I remember sitting in the rear facing back seat traveling everywhere. No private entertainment systems, cells or I pods, just a very obnoxious brother or a close buddy depending on the trip. Very, very cool.
