G-Wagen. Geländewagen. G class. G55. Whatever you choose to call it, there is no mistaking the G55 as anything but a Teutonic off roader. Like the original Hummer, the G-Wagen is loved by armed forces all over the world for it’s utility and off road prowess. Like the H1, the civilian version might be a little more refined than the military brethren, but it retains the supreme off road capabilities.
The AMG version sports a supercharger and sharp looking tips for the high flowing, side exit exhaust. Fire up the V8 and those pipes rumble with authority. In fact, the G55 is so loud it might sound more at home at Pocono Raceway than on the hills at Split Rock.
There isn’t really too much to say about the G-Wagen’s off road abilities. Nothing on the course even caused the truck to break a sweat. While it was running in 4 low, I suspect it would have easily tackled everything we threw at it in 2 wheel drive. Perhaps I would have gotten more excited about the truck if it were in 2wd. As it was, it was actually a bit of a let down that it could have done the whole deal without the driver’s assistance. It really is one of the worlds ultimate off road vehicles and is a must have if the budget allows and the terrain would challenge the truck.
