No Parking on Both Sides

While flipping through the Toronto Star’s Wheels section this morning, I came across a letter that was just too classic not to comment on.

Q I received a parking ticket on a side road in Markham.

There were signs on one side of the road only that said: “Fire access route. No parking on both sides.”

My interpretation was that parking wasn’t allowed on both sides of the post, not both sides of the street.

Is the ticket legal, even though the signs aren’t clear?

Does one have to cross the street, or check all four corners of an intersection, to see if parking is permitted?

Read the response given by the Bylaw Enforcement office after the break. It’s even better!

A Bill Wiles, manager of bylaw enforcement and licensing for Markham, replies:

Mr. Chow received a ticket for parking in a fire route at a community centre after parking control staff responded to complaints.

Staff at the community centre had announced a warning for patrons to remove their vehicles from the driveway/laneway.

With the fire route blocked, TTC and York Region Transit vehicles were unable to drive through the property, and because fire vehicles are of similar size, this became a safety concern to building operators.

All public buildings in Ontario require designated “fire routes” for access of emergency vehicles. Motorists are obligated to know of these regulations as part of their driving privilege. The reply continues here.

This is yet another exmple of the fact that people in our society refuse to accept responsibility for their actions. It also reminds us that 80% of the public have below average intelligence!

What? I say that again, What?

First off I have no idea what Canada driving rules are with no parking signs, they could be different, but going by what is done here in the United States, if there is a no parking sign on only one side of the road, then its only that side thats no parking, I have never seen that before and I have been to Boston.

In my opinion, the ticket is NOT legal.

Good Luck with that.
See Yeah!

I think the difference here is the fact that it was in the driveway of a community center, where they will often only sign one side. The guy had parked in a fire route & community center staff had made an announcement for people to move their cars. this guy ignored the warnings and got caught.
