Stig Blomqvist is competing in the year’s La Carrera behind the wheel of of one of those killer Studebakers. Think Studes are slow? Give your head a shake, these tube frame monsters get motivated by NASCAR engines!
As regular readers know, the artist known as Coop has graciously allowed us to use some of his images to report on the 2009 running of La Carrera Panamericana. There really isn’t too much else out there for coverage so far, so we’re happy Mister Cooper has brought along his camera for the ride.
Qualifying was yesterday and our man Gary Faules has managed to get the qualifying times up. Gary also has a few stories he’s watching as the event rolls forward. Maybe rolls isn’t the best term to use here.
Here is the full qualifying list. You’ll notice that Stig will start 3rd on the road. Here in The Garage, we are obviously rooting for Coop and Gerie Bledsoe in the #395 Chevy, who are playing smart and taking it easy with a #42 start.

I have noticed that for some reason the way the results are being presented are inaccurate or I should say misleading. The reason is that several cars either caught cheating or have no class to run in have been placed in Exhibition Class but they are shown on the overall results. They will NOT be counted as overall competitors so the overall count is off by a few already.
Cheating in the Carrera? say it isn’t so. For me it was always about having fun driving my old contraption on the same roads the original race was run on, winning was never a consideration. I have met some of the most interesting people at the carrera you;ll never meet elsewhere in a life time of vintage racing. I,ve really enjoyed the friendships made with real gear heads. The last time I ran a car was 1995.
I don’t know if I’d really call the cars in the top ten ‘old contraptions.’ Vintage racing is no different from other racing classes in that 95% of the car from the frame up is actually just custom made race parts.
