While at SEMA a few friends from Planet Paint steered me to an unveiling that did not receive much coverage but was plenty cool. If you love visiting, watching or buying at the Barrett-Jackson auction and if you were a fan of the great Dale Earnhardt Sr. boy do you have a treat in store.
Richard Childress was on hand to announce that his company, Richard Childress Racing, would be building a limited number of 1969 Camaro’s with black-and-silver paint schemes dubbed Series 3. The first one out of the shop will be powered by one of Ironhead’s actual championship engines and auctioned off to some wealthy collector of Earnhardt memorabilia at the big 2008 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale.
The Dynacorn bodied, fresh-from-the-ground-up Camaro will probably have broader appeal then to just Dale Sr. fans. The design and power plant will definitely have the pedigree to get it done at a NASA or SCCA track event, or an open road race: A five-speed Tremec; 18×10-front and 18×12-rear wheels shod with BF Goodrich G-Force T/A tires; Baer 13-inch rotors with PBR two-piston aluminum calipers in the front and single piston aluminum calipers in the rear; ProCar Elite Series seats; and a 9-inch Chassisworks FAB9 rear with 3.55:1 gears. Other than the car to be auctioned off in January, buyers will have a choice of either an SB2 RCR small block engine tuned by Childress’ crew and rated at 603hp or an all-aluminum 427-cu.in. GM crate engine.
There will only be 50 of the Series 3 Camaro’s built. For more info on this muscle monster go to tpitotalperformance.com .
Oh, to be rich!
