Images from the 1965 Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport

While searching for a photo to accompany Leighton’s story about the early days of race control, I came across this great set of black and whites from the Canadian Grand Prix on September 25, 1965. These shots, added to the CMSHG galleries by Rob North, are actually scanned from a contact sheet. I love the inclusion of the film as it really does make them look, well, old.

The photo above shows Bruce McLaren with just a nose ahead as the green flag flies. Not the clearest photo, but certainly a moment in history.

More photos after the break.

So, is #66 (7th photo) a replica of a Chinook?!

  2. Scott Lucas says:

Yes . Some guy from Texas copied them and did quite well.

  3. Gary Grant says:

I’m going to have to combine some of the stories you guys have been telling over the past few days and put a story together on the Chinook.

Wasn’t there a partially restored one at the VARAC festival in 08?

  4. Leighton Irwin says:

I think the car beside the Johnson Cobra is a Porsche 904. Driver maybe Joe Buzzeta.
The 2 cars that totally burned out, Augie’s McLaren and Herb Swan’s Elva BMW opened everyones eyes to the fact that regular Dry Chem and foam could not put out a Magnesium fire.
Of course, water was also useless.
One marshal apparently knew enough to bury the burning wheel on the Swan car in sand. That might have saved the car but Herb uncovered it too soon and that was it.

  5. Erik Z says:

The Cobra/Porsche slide is labeled incorrectly: the #324 Cobra is Larry Cohen, not Bob Johnson and the Porsche 904 is Jacques Duval.

  6. Leighton Irwin says:

Well at least I was right it was a 904.
