For those of you who haven’t heard, Michael Schumacher is at it again. Treating Formula One like his own little sandbox where he can do whatever the heck he wants, never receiving any retribution for his actions. Perhaps Flavio Briatore said it best when he said “because it’s this place & it’s Ferarri, nothing will be done”. Historically, Mr. Schumacher has been able to get away with his blatant bad behaviour. His poor sportsmanship has left a very bitter taste in the mouths of F1 fans all over the world. Why has he been able to do it? Because he drives for Ferarri and he is arguably the best driver of all time and the Bernie and Max show don’t have the stones to deal with him. They would rather play dumb & make comments like the one quoted in the title.
This time however, it seems that he may have gone too far.
With minutes left in qualifying, and Fernando Alonso on a flyer, Schumacher rolls to a stop in Rascasse and then deliberately stalls the engine, forcing the end of the session. The pits came alive with controversy. The internet came alive with fans. Perhaps most importantly, the big boys came alive. Team Owners, drivers and just about everyone of importance to the sport spoke publicly against Michael actions. After 8 hours of studying in car video & telemetry, race officials did the right thing and not only stripped Michael of his pole, but also moved him to the back of the grid. While many seem to feel that this is too strong a punishment, perhaps it is a sign that even the officials are tire of this arrogance.
Almost laughable is the response from Schumi’s manager, Willi Weber:”Michael is not amused”. Awww…poor baby got paddled for misbehaving. Speculators are saying that this may be the incident that causes Michael to retire, essentially picking up his ball and going home. I say good riddance. You may be one of the best driver’s that has ever lived, but your poor sportsmanship and plain old bad manners just don’t belong. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!
