2010 Ford Glass Roof Mustang

Regular readers of The Garage will know from our review of the 2010 Ford Mustang GT, but Ford announced this week that the Glass Roof option will again be available on both Base and GT Mustangs as a $1,995USD option. The glass roof offers incomparable amounts of year round sunshine in a way a moonroof cannot. Doubters be warned-the car is hardly like sitting in a sauna when the weather turns hot. Ford engineers claim the glass roof filters 90% of heat (infra-red) rays, and 96% of sun burn causing UV rays, or the equivalent of wearing SPF 50 sun screen.

The Glass Roof became an option on the Mustang in 2008, and since then Ford claims that 10% of all Mustangs are sold with this option. Ford sees the popularity of glass roofs on the rise, and now offers Glass Roof as an option on the Flex, Edge, and the Lincoln MKZ and MKS.

One of the best options I have ever seen on any car and yet I personally would not buy it. If I was to buy a Mustang, it would see track duty on the weekends and a glass roof panel just isn’t conducive to lapping days.

On the road though, the glass roof gives the coolest experience ever. Thunder storms are spectacular from beneath the panoramic window. While we didn’t have hot summer sun, there didn’t seem to be any significant issues with heat in the cabin.

I used to test drive Chevy Lumina vans on our 550 mile drives up they coast, you know the one with the really slopped windshield like Aaron Von Monsters space shuttle. Along the way my kids used to ride on the dash facing up when we got to the California Redwoods which made for an awesome view. It may not have been approved by law enforcement but you know the law we live by… It’s legal if there’s no cop around. However, now that the glass roof Mustang is available all that’s changed.

PS; For the record, the Mustang see thru roof idea is far from new and it was Ford & Mercury that was the first to have it back in the 50’s. One of my neighbors had one we used to drive around and the window was even larger than the one in the Stang.
