Team press release
(Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin) August 23rd 2011 – Fresh off a pole position and lap record at Mosport Int’l Raceway as well as a victory at Mid-Ohio just a few weeks ago, Marcelli was anxious for extra success on the 4.5 mile road course located in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Unfortunately, what started out as another promising race weekend for the talented 21-year-old Canadian race driver, the weekend’s 4-hour Time Warner Cable Road Race Showcase at Road America ended with disappointment.
After building a successful professional American Le Mans Series career the last two seasons working closely with the Field family and Intersport Racing, Marcelli was appointed to the drivers seat of the Performance Tech Motorsports #18 LMPC entry for the 4-hour ALMS endurance event at Road America. Driving alongside Kyle Marcelli was American drivers Anthony Nicolosi and Jarrett Boon.
Getting into an unfamiliar race car for the first time on Thursday afternoon, Marcelli worked closely with the Performance Tech Motorsports crew to get the #18 LMPC dialed in. The team struggled in the early stages of testing with steering and brake issues, however worked through to solve them and began to focus all attention to developing the handling and performance of the Oreca FLM09/Chevrolet race car. With multiple red flag accidents throughout the Thursday and Friday test days it was difficult for Marcelli as well as Anthony Nicolosi and Jarrett Boon to get many productive laps in.
Qualifying was a nail bitter as race driver Kyle Marcelli put down a quick lap which gave him the unofficial pole position, Marcelli held the top stop until the final lap where his lap time was narrowly bettered by veteran drivers Butch Litzigner and Gunnar Jeanette. This pushed Marcelli back to 3rd yet only 0.012 (twelve hundredths of a second) off the pole position. This would have given Performance Tech Motorsports their first pole position as a team.
“I gave away that pole position all on my own, the car was great and we had the pace. Unfortunately it was a mistake on my last flying lap pushing too hard through turn 6 which put me off track. The team nonetheless did a wonderful job and gave me the car I needed to do the job.†Said Kyle Marcelli
The grandstands were full of spectators and the infield was packed with campers as the green flag waved at 3:00pm Saturday afternoon marking the start of the Time Warner Cable Road Race Showcase. Anthony Nicolosi started the driving duties for the 4-hour event. Unfortunately, it was a mistake early into the race as Nicolosi lost grip turning into the very high-speed carousel which spun the #18 LMPC around and into the gravel trap. This brought out the first full course caution of the race and dropped the #18 LMPC down two laps. At about the one-hour mark into the race it was an expected pit stop for fuel which got Jarrett Boon behind the wheel. Jarrett drove a great mistake free stint in the car before the next scheduled pit-stop for fuel and tires at the 2-hour mark, which got Kyle Marcelli in the drivers seat to finish the remaining 2-hours of the 4-hour race. Although Marcelli was matching the pace of the race leaders he was unfortunately still two laps down and remained so until the end of the race. Only able to pick up a few positions throughout the double stint, Marcelli crossed the stripe taking the checkered flag P6 in class earning valuable points however not the result that was hoped for nor a result that represented the potential of the team.
“We came into the weekend full of confidence. The team deserved a result worthy of the effort and hard work they have put in, unfortunately it just wasn’t in the cards. With that said I think we made good progress with the development and handling of the #18 which should steer the Performance Tech Motorsports crew in the right direction for the remainder of the season.†Stated Kyle Marcelli in a post race interview.
