Damon Sharpe joins Blanchet Motorsports for 2012 CTCC season

This is an action packed weekend of racing, with the Sebring 12 hour, the first F1 race of 2012 and the roundy round folks having a go in Bristol, but it is nice to have a bit of local news too.

Blanchet Motorsports have announced that Damon Sharpe has joined their team for the full 2012 Canadian Touring Car Championship. With a winning background as a CASCAR crew chief and formula car driver, Sharpe worked in a tuning capacity in 2011. In just a handful of driving stints, Sharpe showed speed in the Honda Civic racer, including a podium finish at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in July.

BLANCHET MOTORSPORTS announced today Damon Sharpe as driver of the #84 Betz Pools, Bio-Guard Honda Civic Si in the Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Continental Tire.

2012 will be the 6th season of competition for BLANCHET MOTORSPORTS. The team’s primary driver, Ryan Blanchet, is taking the year off to focus on studies in Multi Media and Design but will continue to be an integral part of the organization taking over marketing and communications duties until he is in a position to get behind the wheel again.

Sharpe’s original relationship with the team was to help with car setups and elevate the team’s status in professional road racing. Sharpe was handed the wheel for a few events and had some immediate success, highlighted by a 3rd place finish at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park so it was an easy decision to elect him to replace Blanchet.

“We have been competing in Canadian Touring Car since its inception and we have seen improved results since bringing Damon in to aid with the technical side 2 seasons ago,” said Team Principal Frank Blanchet. “We had a friendly agreement to put Damon behind the wheel for a few events last season and we had good runs so it was a natural to put him in for this season,” he added.

Sharpe has 23 wins as Crew Chief in the former CASCAR Super Series, now known as NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and has also started in 4 Series Races with an 8th place finish in his debut race in Edmonton. Damon has also competed in select US F2000 races early in his driving career.

“I am really excited to get this season started”, said Sharpe. “Frank and Ryan have been awesome to work with and for them to put their support behind me as the driver of this car means a lot to me. They have a great team of guys and they have been working hard over the winter on the Civic to give me a car that is capable of being a consistent threat for podium finishes week in and week out,” he added.
