Carnival of Wheels: Edition #24

It certainly feels like summer now, even though the real start is a few weeks away. The flowers are in bloom, the outdoor car show circuit is in full swing and racetracks are abuzz all over. As a result, today we bring you the shortest Carnival of Wheels of all time. Just one entry, as our regulars are all out enjoying the weather. Here in The Garage, we’re doing as close to nothing as possible. That may include cleaning out The Garage a bit and then sitting down in the afternoon to watch the Canadian Grand Prix. So let’s get on with this thing!

As regular readers know, We don’t watch too much NASCAR here in The Garage and even when we do it’s only to check up on a friend of the family. He’s just a big old kart racer who’s having a bit of fun, really he is. I heard a bit of rumbling earlier in the week about the Busch incident and the size of the fine, so I figured the Brian over at RaceDriven would let me in on the details this week. He didn’t let me down.

I need to put in my 2 cents worth on this nonsense. Racing is dangerous enough without some moron risking the life of a crew member deliberately. NASCAR needs to get their shit together and start applying corrective actions of an appropriate level for their athletes misdemeanors. Giant fines for flipping the bird. Even bigger fines for piddly mechanical infractions. What happens when you aim your sliding car at a crew member? A heavy slap on the wrist! Some may argue that the 100 point deduction is huge. It may even take him out of The Chase for good. Tough titties! It’s not enough.

When a hockey player deliberately goes for a head shot, they are suspended for several games. In extreme cases, there has even been real world legal fights. What is the difference between Bertuzzi smoking a guy in the head with his stick and Busch aiming his car at a crew member? Nothing. Suspend the guy for 3 races. If you piss off Miller Lite and Penske loses his sponsor, so be it. Maybe then this a-hole will learn that there is a big difference between flipping the bird and trying to kill someone.

Ok, enough ranting! It’s time to head out and enjoy the sun. Watch later for some pics from a huge local cruise last night. Be sure to come back next Sunday for the next edition of the CoW. Bloggers, be sure to get your submissions in before Saturday at midnight.

For race fans all over whom were seeking exciting races it didn’t really matter what your favorite venue of racing was this weekend because they were all filled with high octane action. The Canadian Grand Prix was just one such race and after watching a serious crash it was good to hear the driver is doing well. You would never have believed it had you watched the crash. Even if you don’t like NASCAR you have to appreciate the strategy of the crew chief that won the race for Jeff Gordon. Yes, it was the crew chief that won with his split second decision making that ended with the big “W”. And it’s not a fluke since he has shown his judgment making ability in several races this year. Just one more reason to appreciate racing for more than the driving and cars alone.

Kubica’s crash was truly frightening. From a design standpoint, it’s amazing that his only injury was a sprain! I shudder to think of the outcome if the car had gone over that low wall!
