2009 Monster 696 – Monsters Inc. Reborn

2009 Monster 696In the tunnel a mid-90’s blue Cavalier pulls along side. Glancing to the right, through the glass, I see the driver mouthing the words, “Is that the new Monster?” I nod. He gives me a thumbs up, and with a roll on of the throttle the tunnel fills with the 2009 Monster 696’s twin under-seat exhaust barking their departure.

The 2008 Suzuki SX-4 : SX for the City

Belting through traffic, I feel as if I should be slaloming wash lines, market carts and pavement cafes, rather than behemoth SUVs, Cube Vans and moderately enraged drivers… one of which happens to be our cameraman in a pursing BMW 535xi. There’s Italian city car flair to the Suzuki SX4, and for good reason; in essence it is a Fiat Sedici…

2007 BMW R1200R – Bloody Gouts of Torque

Almost every bike has a one defining element, something that differentiates it in a crowded market place. Occasionally that’s luscious looks, cosseting comfort, prodigious power, outstanding handling (okay, I ran out of alliteration there); with the BMW R1200R you’ve got to dig as deep as your first good pull of the throttle. There it is, what defines an otherwise plain Jane “naked”… an engine that gouts torque like a Monty Python skit gouts blood.

2008 Infiniti G37S Coupe - The Art of War

In Plasma Red, the 2008 Infiniti G37S seems painted with the spilled blood of the BMW 335i Coupe. One wonders if Infiniti hasn’t delved into Sun Tzu’s 6th century BC military treatise, to guide its battle. The G35 couldn’t have pulled this off, especially with BMW throwing a 300hp/300lb-ft torque twin-turbo grenade into the luxury sport coupe fray. The G37S, however, is a warrior as deeply disciplined in the ways of the road and refined in the art of sport coupe war as any of the competition.

2008 VOLVO XC70 - SNOW-MOBILE

The 2008 Volvo XC70 has received a few lukewarm reviews, but OutDrive.ca thinks that’s a matter of context. Determined to put the all-wheel drive in its natural setting, and Sweden not being handy, OutDrive.ca headed to the interior of BC to find out.

2008 Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan 2.0T - Swede Deal

2008 Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan 2.0T - The Swede Deal

Saab has always attracted a slightly eclectic and literate fan base, so naturally we at OutDrive have felt the draw. The official stamp of brand quirkiness, the late Kurt Vonnegut, was the owner and manager of “Saab Cape Cod”. Saab has come a long way from the oil-gas mix, two-stroke, two-door sedans Vonnegut blames for robbing him of a Nobel Prize for Literature in, “Have I Got a Car For You”. Luckily for us, we’re not in a temporally twisted parallel universe where Vonnegut sold the equivalent of a 2008 9-3 Sport Sedan 2.0T, otherwise his excellent non-Nobel literature may never have been penned. Opening the Garage Door

bugeyed.jpg

Thumb the button and the door swings upward with a satisfying mechanical grating and an electric motor’s thrum laboring. In my mind’s eye that is my welcome to the Garage, as I fish around my pocket for a set of keys. The joy of reviewing bikes and cars for a “living” (I use the term loosely) is you’re a member of the vehicle of the week club. After five years running OneWheelDrive.Net and a few months on the car side with OutDrive.ca, I’ve never quite lost that new metal thrill. Continue reading →
